1. La Llorona (2019)

Not to be confused with The Conjuring series filmThe Curse of La Llorona, this take on the iconic La Llorona tale hails from Guatemala and follows a former dictator who is being tried for the brutal genocide of native Mayans (based on real events from the '80s) and is simultaneously being haunted by, you guessed it, a weeping woman.

2. Cronos (1994)

This is Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro's first feature film and, side note, also a part of the Criterion Collection! So, yeah, it's good. Anyway, Cronos follows an antique dealer named Jesus who happens upon an ancient, 14th-century scarab-like device called Cronos. It grants him youth and eternal life...but not without a price.

3. Madres (2021)

One of the new films featured in the Welcome to the Blumhouse series this year, Madres follows the story of a young Mexican American couple in the 1970s. As the due date for their first child quickly approaches, the wife begins to have ~unusual~ symptoms and horrifying visions. The couple begin to wonder whether this is the result of a legendary curse...or something worse.

4. The Old Ways (2020)

Demons, possessions, and exorcisms...oh my! This horror film follows Mexican America reporter Cristina on a trip to her hometown of Veracruz. Although she's there for a story, Cristina ends up finding herself in a bit of a pickle...the locals believe she's possessed by a demon.

5. The Silent House (La Casa Muda) (2010)

This Uruguayan horror film is supposedly inspired by a true story from the 1940s. And while that may or not be true (do we take the filmmakers' word for it?), it's true that this film did inspire an English language remake (also titled Silent House) starring Elizabeth Olsen. It's a pretty straightforward haunted house story, but a fun thing to know is that it was shot in a single take. Impressive.

6. The Similars (Los Parecidos) (2015)

This moody horror film follows a group of strangers trapped in a bus station around the time of the Tlatelolco massacre in Mexico City in 1968. As the waiting passengers weather out a storm, nightmarish horror ensues. The film has a fun ~old-timey~ look and style to it, which adds a fun and unique twist to the genre.

7. From Dusk till Dawn (1996)

If you love vampires and ass-kicking, then Robert Rodriguez's famous action horror film will be right up your alley. Although the film got a lot of mixed reviews back in the day, it has since gained a cult following and even had a spinoff series. The story follows two brothers, criminals (played by George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino, who also wrote the script), who kidnap a family and cross the Mexico-US border into Mexico only to end up in a bar full of bloodthirsty vampires and a whole lotta trouble.

8. Good Manners (As Boas Maneiras) (2017)

If you're into a good werewolf story, then Good Manners is absolutely one to check out. Set in Brazil, this dark fantasy horror film follows a nurse named Clara who is hired by a mysterious woman to nanny her child...that turns out to be a werewolf.

9. Tigers Are Not Afraid (Vuelven) (2017)

This horror film from Mexican filmmaker Issa López crosses over into the dark fantasy/fairy tale genre. It follows the story of a young, recently orphaned girl named Estrella who joins a gang of other orphaned children. Both Guillermo del Toro and horror icon Stephen King are big fans of the movie, if that tells you anything. So do yourself a favor and check this one out...if you dare.

10. Diablo Rojo PTY (2019)

From Panamanian filmmakers Sol Moreno (in her feature film directorial debut) and J. Oskura Nájera comes the wickedly evil Diablo Rojo PTY. The film deals with folklore from Panama's history and follows a group of people on a "Red Devil" bus ride complete with witches, cannibals, and all kinds of other monsters. Buckle up, because it's a serious "ride through hell."

11. Juan of the Dead (Juan de los Muertos) (2011)

Sometimes you want a little (or a lot of) comedy with your horror, and that's where Juan of the Dead comes slashing in. Playing off of the title of the 1978 horror classic Dawn of the Dead, this film is set in Cuba and follows our hero Juan as he starts a zombie-killing business to, well, save the living from the walking dead!

12. The Wolf House (La Casa Lobo) (2018)

This one wins in terms of creativity. The Wolf House is a stop animation horror that follows the story of a young woman in Chile who escapes a group of religious German fanatics. It's surreal, unsettling, and sure to scar your memory for life.

13. The Day of the Lord (Menendez Parte 1: El día del Señor) (2020)

More exorcisms! This Mexican horror film follows the story of a former, now retired, priest who is, of course, tormented by his past. Now living in seclusion, he's called upon a friend to perform an exorcism on his daughter.

14. Vampires vs. the Bronx (2020)

The title is pretty self-explanatory, but Vampires vs. the Bronx follows a group of teens in the Bronx who have to defend their neighborhood against, well, vampires (whose invasion of this NY neighborhood is a metaphor for gentrification)! As you can imagine, a lot of horror, comedy, and blood-sucking action ensues.

15. The Untamed (La Región Salvaje) (2016)

This film is less of a traditional horror film and more of a psychological horror film with lots of sex and a, uh, tentacled alien. Described as "tentacular sci-fi erotica," there's a lot of weird stuff happening in the movie, but it has a very A24 vibe, and director Amat Escalante won a Silver Lion for Best Director at the Venice Film Festival. So, make of that what you will!

16. The Forever Purge (2021)

Directed by Everardo Gout and starring Ana de la Reguera, Tenoch Huerta, and Alejandro Edda, this is the latest addition to The Purge series. Set in the future (2048), the story follows Mexican couple Adela and Juan, who cross the Mexican-US border into a dystopian Texas. Things eventually go very wrong for Adela, Juan, and their friends when a group of evil outliers continue to purge beyond the allowed time. The film may be a little predictable, but if you're signing up to watch a Purge film, you get what you're looking for.

17. The Devil's Backbone (El espinazo del diablo) (2001)

What better way to round out this list than with another excellent Guillermo del Toro film, right? This is the auteur's third feature film and one that still holds a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, NBD! Set during the Spanish Civil War, this gothic horror film follows the journey of a young boy who finds himself at a haunted orphanage with some very dark secrets.
