This “Willy Wonka” Easter Egg In The “Ready Player One” Trailer Will Give You Chills

I mean, there was a lot going on, so that's totally fair.

So, Ready Player One doesn't come out until next year, but honestly? You should be very excited because the premise is pretty effing great.

    Warner Bros.

For those who don't know, basically, Ready Player One is set in a dystopian future, specifically 2044, where everyone is obsessed with a giant, worldwide virtual reality gaming network called OASIS. OASIS is filled with a TON of '80s pop culture references and also contains some important Easter eggs. The Easter eggs, however, aren't just for fun — because whoever finds them all will inherit a multi-billion dollar fortune left behind by OASIS' late creator, James Halliday.

Now, one of the key things to know about Ready Player One is that Willy Wonka is actually a pretty big influence on the story. In fact, the book has even been described as "Willy Wonka meets The Matrix."

And, fun fact: Wil Wheaton reads the audiobook version of Ready Player One, should you fellow nerds be so inclined.

It was even rumored at one point that Steven Spielberg had tried to bring Gene Wilder out of retirement to play the Halliday role (obviously, before he passed away last year) — because CAN YOU IMAGINE how bad-ass that would've been? SIGH.

Oscar winner and current Spielberg muse Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies, The BFG), however, was ultimately cast in the role.

There were a TON of Easter eggs from the book in the Ready Player One trailer released at Comic-Con, but there was actually a super subtle nod to Willy Wonka in the trailer you probably missed.

Near the beginning of the trailer, you can actually hear the iconic bell intro to "Pure Imagination" from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory:

It happens around the :07 mark.

And, for comparison's sake/a refresher, here's what "Pure Imagination" sounds like:

Hear the "dings" that start at about the :10 mark?

    Pretty cool, right?

Although, TBH, I'd PROBABLY take a giant, magical candy factory over a giant video game network...buuuuut that's just me.
