21 Songs That Got You Dancing At The School Disco In The '90s And '00s

Time to crack out the "Nutbush."

Posted on

1. "I Want Candy" - Aaron Carter

Jive Records / Via youtube.com

Why it got you dancing: With a catchy beat, this Aaron Carter bop was hard to ignore when it came on. Plus, it was a great song to dance along to with your BFFs... and you definitely argued with them at some stage about who would've been Candy.

Bonus points if you knew the dance moves from the video clip.

2. "Pon de Replay" - Rihanna

Def Jam / Via youtube.com

Why it got you dancing: Let me tell you, this was a JAM. It was all about dancing in the club, it was all about dancing in the club, which made you forget you were even in the school hall.

3. "The Hampsterdance Song" by Hampton the Hampster

ZYX Music / Via youtube.com

Why it got you dancing: This is by no stretch a GOOD song, but if you pumped this bad boy out at any school disco kids would just go CRAZY for it. With a beat like this, there was really no wrong way to dance to it.

4. "Rumours" - Lindsay Lohan

Casablanca Records / Via youtube.com

Why it got you dancing: This tragically underrated song by Lindsay Lohan was great for later in the night, when you were trying to get the attention of your crush by dancing ~scandalously~. You desperately just wanted to look as edgy as Lindsay did in the video, but tbh you know you never did.

5. "4ever" - The Veronicas

Sire / Via youtube.com, Via youtube.com

Why it got you dancing: You loved this song because it made you feel way older and cooler than you probably were. It also was a great song to dance to if you couldn't dance because you spent most of the song jumping up and down on the spot.

6. "Everytime We Touch" - Cascada

Robbins / Via youtube.com

Why it got you dancing: A trashy euro-pop dance break in the middle of a song is always a great reason to get out and dance. Additionally, this song was on SingStar so you knew all the lyrics.

7. "Macarena" (Bayside Boys Mix) - Los Del RIo

RCA / Via youtube.com

Why it got you dancing: There is just something so wonderful about everyone lining up and joining in to dance the "Macarena". A staple at any disco.

8. "Hey Ya!" - OutKast

LaFace / Arista / Via youtube.com

Why it got you dancing: This song had you running to the dancefloor so you had the chance to "shake it like a polaroid picture" (even though you might not have known what that was).

9. "Strawberry Kisses" - Nikki Webster

Gotham / Via href="youtube.com

Why it got you dancing: The lights are down, there's a pause in the music, and then you hear "I've been missing, wishing, missing your strawberry kisses", and you knew the DJ came to party. There was nothing as sweet as dancing to this song with your group of friends while unashamedly belting out the lyrics.

10. "Yeah!" - Usher feat. Lil Jon and Ludacris

Arista / Via youtube.com

Why it got you dancing: This song made your eleven-year-old self feel like a motherfucking boss. It also gave you a chance to practice those sweet moves you'd been learning in your hip-hop classes.

11. "5, 6, 7, 8"- Steps

Jive / Via youtube.com

Why it got you dancing: There was something about this slightly country techno-pop jam that commanded your attention on the dancefloor. You always heard rumours of a dance that accompanied it, but it wasn't until you were older and able to look up the video on YouTube that you realised people were telling the truth.

12. "Don't Cha" - The Pussycat Dolls feat. Busta Rhymes

A&M / Via youtube.com

Why it got you dancing: Chances are your crush liked someone else. But when this song came on, it gave you the confidence to drag your friends on the dancefloor and ~sexy dance~ near your crush to show them what they were missing out on.

13. "Fast Food Song" - Fast Food Rockers

Mike Stock Music / Via google.com.au

Why it got you dancing: With lyrics like "let's eat to the beat," this song had your heart from the get-go. It had an easy enough in-built dance that EVERYONE seemed to know (and this was pre-YouTube days, so you couldn't just go online to learn it).

14. "Nu Flow" - Big Brovaz

Riot Records, Sony/Epic / Via youtube.com

Why it got you dancing: The hip-hop beat in this song got your hips swaying which frankly made you feel cooler than you probably were.

15. "Nutbush City Limits" - Ike & Tina Turner

United Artists / Via youtube.com

Why it got you dancing: You didn't need to ask anyone twice to jump off their seat and participate in the "Nutbush" (and also learning it was THE BEST P.E lesson).

16. "Fergalicious" - Fergie

A&M Records / Via youtube.com

Why it got you dancing: You probably never were as Fergalicious as Fergie was in the music video. But that didn't stop you from busting out your best moves and trying anyway.

17. "Cotton Eye Joe" - Rednex

Internal Affairs / Via youtube.com

Why it got you dancing: I guess there is just something about mixing banjos, fiddles, and techno music that sent kids wild. A great song to bop along, and square dance to.

18. "YMCA" - Village People

Casablanca / Via href="youtube.com

Why it got you dancing: Much like the "Macarena", the "YMCA" was just one of those dances that you had to get up off your seat to be a part of.

19. "Mambo No. 5" - Lou Bega

RCA / Via youtube.com

Why it got you dancing: The mambo beats got you straight on your feet and dancing away. You often found yourself acting out the song in the second verse, and you probably secretly wanted to be Jessica.

Bonus points: If your first exposure to this song was thanks to Bob the Builder.

20. "Get Right" - Jennifer Lopez

Epic / Via youtube.com

Why it got you dancing: That sax horn alone is enough to get ANYONE up dancing but paired with the beat as well, it's just so goddamn catchy. Also it has an epically long dance break, which gave you enough time to show everyone just how lit your moves were.

21. "S Club Party" - S Club 7

Polydor / Via youtube.com

Why it got you dancing: As S Club 7 said themselves, "there ain't no party like an S Club Party". And damn wasn't that the truth! This song is an absolute banger of the highest calibre, and it's catchy dance-pop beat was a call to arms to sprint to the dancefloor to meet up with your crew.

For your enjoyment, here's a Spotify playlist to really take you back.

Tragically, "I Want Candy" is nowhere to be found on Spotify. I know, I am just as sad about it as you are.
