These pages, called intentionally blank pages occur because books are typically printed on giant pieces of paper that make up 8, 16, or 32 pages in the final book. These blank pages are the leftover pages from the printing process that aren’t needed.

4. Why are wedding dresses white?


Wedding dresses used to be any color, it was simply the best dress a woman owned. The white wedding dress didn’t become a thing until Queen Victoria popularized it in the 19th century when she wore one for her own wedding.

5. Why is it called football when your feet don't touch the ball?


Football is a derivative of rugby football which itself was a derivative of football (soccer). Football could have easily been called rugby in its early years, but in 1876, the term “football” was established for the college football season. Outside of the US, the sport is simply known as “gridiron” or “American football.”

6. Why does your hair get lighter, but your skin gets darker in the sun?


In both instances the sun destroys melanin, a pigment found in the cells, but the key difference is that hair is comprised of dead cells, while your skin is alive. The melanin will remain destroyed in your hair, thus your hair gets lighter, whereas your skin will produce extra melanin to replace the lost pigment.

7. Why is the sky blue?


Sunlight is comprised of all the colors of the rainbow, but the Earth’s atmosphere scatters the blue light from the rest of the sunlight, thus making the sky look blue.

8. Where did the happy birthday song come from?


The melody of “Happy Birthday to You” comes from the song “Good Morning to All,” which was written and composed by siblings Patty Hill and Mildred J. Hill in 1893. The melody and lyrics for “Happy Birthday to You” were registered for copyright in 1935 by The Summer Company with Preston Ware Orem and Mrs. R.R. Forman credited as the authors.

9. Why are pants plural when there’s only one of them?


Before modern tailoring, “pants” were made from two parts, one for each leg, whereas shirts were made from one piece of fabric. The plural usage persisted even after pants started being made from one piece of fabric.

10. Where does fat go when you lose it?


Your fat cells shrink as the excess energy stored in them is used to generate heat and waste products such as water and carbon dioxide. You literally urinate, sweat and breathe out your “fat.”
