Itchy... Tasty...

Ever since the release of Capcom's Resident Evil (Biohazard in Japan) in 1996, gamers have been hungering for more Resi-action like blood thirsty zombie dogs at an all you can eat human flesh buffet. Credited with starting the "survival horror" genre, Resident Evil was a critical and commercial success. Tales of its fear inducing gameplay spread like a virus, and soon everyone was infected. There's no doubt about it, the Resident Evil series is tremendously popular. With five sequels, one prequel, a handful of spinoffs and a few remakes thrown in there for good measure, the series has gradually mutated into one of the most successful videogame franchises of all time!

Despite receiving praise from critics and fans alike, the series has undeniably had more than its fair share of questionable moments. Some have been downright insane! And not in a good way… From giant undead stalkers, to rifle wielding, murderous mad-men in dresses (yep, you heard me) here are the Top 5 Ridiculous Resident Evil Moments!

5. Monster Embryos and Miracle Vaccines - The Sherry Birkin Saga (RE 2)

Remember Sherry Birkin from Resident Evil 6? Before becoming the kick-ass government agent she is today, she was once just an ordinary kid. An ordinary kid who just so happened to survive the colossal zombie outbreak in Raccoon City during Resident Evil 2.

Oh, and let’s not forget that time when her father, William Birkin, injected himself with the G-virus and rapidly mutated into a horrific monster; which roamed the ruined city seeking human hosts to plant mini-monster embryos inside! One of which found its way inside Sherry! In a way she was sort of carrying her father’s mutant baby for a while… Wrong on so many levels (videogame pun intended).

All seemed lost for poor Sherry, until Claire Redfield came and saved the day! Hats off to Claire for defying science and creating a vaccine in a matter of minutes. Hats even further off to Sherry for making a full recovery in five seconds after taking said vaccine. At least she got her happy ending (except for the fact that both her parents died in the outbreak, but you can’t have it all can you?).

4. Nemesis and the Ineffective Restraining Order (RE 3)

Nemesis, a bio-organic weapon created by the evil Umbrella Corporation, is arguably one of the most popular and well recognised antagonists of the Resident Evil franchise. His first appearance in Resident Evil 3 - where he brutally murders Jill Valentine’s friend and fellow S.T.A.R.S. member Brad Vickers - struck fear into the very core of all who dared to play it.

However, shrieks of terror quickly diminished into sighs of annoyance at around Nemesis’s fourth or fifth appearance. Eventually he became less of an impending threat and more like a clingy ex that just won’t leave you alone. Seriously Nemesis, move on. We’re finished. Game over.

3. Alfred’s Secret (RE Code Veronica)

As far as Claire Redfield was concerned, she was being hunted by a crazy pair of twins known as Alfred and Alexia Ashford during the first part of Resident Evil: Code Veronica. Little did she know it was only one of the gruesome twosome that she had to worry about. See, Alfred’s mental state had deteriorated over the years, so much so that he, well… he went a bit mental to say the least. Without the comforting company of his dear sister (she had put herself into cryogenic suspension fifteen years previously, but that’s a whole different story) he drifted into madness. Eventually his mind shattered and he developed a second persona – he thought he was his twin, Alexia!

After dressing up as Alexia and failing to kill Claire (yet again) he caught a glimpse of himself in the mirror without his wig (it fell off during the scuffle) and with a face full of smeared make-up; this was the moment he realised that the Alexia he thought he had known for years was nothing more than a schizophrenic delusion. Tragic. He would have been an amazing contestant on RuPaul's Drag Race if he was actually, you know, sane. One might feel sorry for him if it wasn’t for all the murders…

2. Killer Tofu (RE 2)

Back to Resident Evil 2 in our countdown of ridiculous, old school Resident Evil moments, and narrowly missing out on the top spot is the unlockable mini-game Tofu Survivor. That’s right, a bonus game in which you play as a block of tofu, because, well... because why not?

This mode is only made available upon completing all of the game’s possible scenarios with A rankings, making this big old softie one of the toughest characters to unlock in the entire series. Tofu comes equipped with a single combat knife and a bunch of herbs, and it curses in Japanese when hit! Only in Resident Evil…

1. “Jill Sandwich” (RE 1)

For the most ridiculous Resident Evil moment we’re taking a step back in time to the root of all evil: the original game. Set in an eerie mansion on the outskirts of Raccoon City, Jill Valentine and the rest of the S.T.A.R.S. crew found themselves trapped and about to be made meals of by flesh-hungry monsters! Evidently, these horrific creatures weren’t the only ones with food on their minds, as the team’s weapons expert Barry Burton soon made clear.

Picture the scene: Jill Valentine is wandering through the zombie-infested mansion, which, for some reason, is rigged with outlandish booby-traps (who designed this place, the production team for I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here?). She enters a small, cupboard-like room when the door locks behind her, trapping her. Sounds pretty bad, right? Well, to make matters even worse, the ceiling starts descending, threatening to crush our beloved Jill in a matter of seconds!

Good job Barry was there to rescue Ms Valentine from a squishy end. Bursting through the door, he dived into the room and pulled Jill to safety! Then he uttered the most ludicrous, preposterous and downright laughable line of dialogue in videogame history:

“That was too close! You were almost a Jill sandwich!"

A Jill sandwich? For goodness’ sake Barry the woman’s just nearly died! Is this really the time for your wise-cracking remarks? Inappropriate.

Did you find Sherry's miracle recovery and the stalking habits of Nemesis a bit over the top?
