13 Things Every Marine Knows That You'll Never See On The News

There are some common experiences that Marines (and Soldiers) who have deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan understand but that the news never really explains. Here's a snapshot of those instants in time. I talk about it more in my book "The Lieutenant Don't Know" which you can check out at http://clementjd.com

    1. That the sunrise is amazing in a landscape unmarred by infrastructure

    2. That these people are growing poppies for opium—and are on the Taliban’s bankroll

    3. That this might be a good guy (I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for the moment)

    4. But that this is almost definitely a bad guy

    5. That turning onto this street and finding it completely empty in the middle of the day is a “very bad thing”

    6. That the silence after an IED strike is terrifying, because you don’t know if anyone is alive or not

    7. That a handful of Marines whose truck just hit an IED will gladly kick some ass

    8. That the sound of a helicopter overhead is the sound of security

    9. That you need to learn how to fall asleep anywhere

    10. That the sun setting is a bad thing

    11. That you hold the lives of your brothers in your hands when you’re on post

    12. And at the end of the day, not showering for a couple weeks or more doesn’t really matter (too much)

    13. Because what really matters are the Marines next to you
