If You've Ever Visited The United States, I Want To Know What Surprised You About How We Eat Compared To Your Home Country

So you're telling me desk lunches aren't a thing elsewhere...

It has come to my attention that many aspects of American culture come as quite a shock to the rest of the world. I mean, where else can you purchase a deadly weapon while also shopping for some breakfast cereal?

Having grown up in an immigrant household, I've seen my fair share of culture shocks. But the one that seems to ALWAYS trip people up is American food. I don't just mean the bonkers creations we've invented over the years (I'm looking at you Domino's Oreo Pizza) but the whole idea of food culture in America.

So, if you visited the States and were completely taken aback by how we eat, when we eat, what we eat, or all of the above, I want to know all about it!

Maybe the first time you went out to a restaurant you were absolutely floored by the size of the portions and ended up eating chicken parm for your next three meals.

Maybe you actually love the big portions, but you don't love eating them at 5 p.m. Or much to my shock when I was a kid, with a tall glass of milk. Why oh why did they serve us so much milk as children?!

Alright, let's say you don't mind the early dinners or the beverage choices, but maybe you're confused as to why everyone eats lunch at their desk. And why is it always a shakeable Sweetgreen salad? Does no one take an actual lunch break in this country??

Perhaps munching on a container of lettuce at your desk makes sense to you, but you still don't understand why everyone is drinking iced coffee year-round. And why is it almost $8 and always to-go?!

Speaking of to-go, did the culture around ordering delivery and takeout have you absolutely flabbergasted? Just a click of a button, and you don't even have to talk to a soul. You may have grown to love it, but maybe you forgot to tip 20% (or more) and received a bombastic side-eye from your driver.

Whatever it is that had you confused beyond belief when it came to food culture in the US, I want to know! Use the comments below to tell me where you're from, what elements of our food culture shocked you the most while stateside, and why.
