No Murder Charges To Be Filed In Connection With Memphis Officer Shot Dead

Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong said the shooting is not be treated as a death of an officer in the line of duty.

A Memphis police officer was shot multiple times Sunday afternoon and died in hospital, police said.

Officer Terence Olridge, 31, joined the police department last year. He is survived by his fiance, who is four-months pregnant, his mother, and other family members, Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong said.

On Tuesday, Armstrong said no charges will be filed directly relating to the death, but authorities are still investigating, according to the Associated Press.

Police said Olridge, who was on his way to work Sunday afternoon, was shot as he exchanged gunfire with his neighbor Lorenzo Clark, after the two got into an argument. Armstrong said the shooting is not be treated as a death of an officer in the line of duty, according to the AP.

Clark was charged with possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.

Armstrong spoke Sunday afternoon outside the hospital where Olridge was pronounced dead. Other officers who worked with Olridge were also at the hospital to pay their respects, the police director said.

Olridge's death came just two months after a manhunt related to the fatal shooting of another Memphis police officer, Sean Bolton.

"It just doesn’t get any easier," Armstrong said. "I didn’t think we’d be here again so soon."

In February, Olridge spoke to My FOX Memphis at his police graduation ceremony.

"Got a task ahead of me and I am prepared," Olridge said.
