This Poached Egg Hack Will Change Your Breakfast Game Forever

You don't have to master the 'gentle whirlpool' to make yourself a decent poached egg. h/t Jamie Oliver's Everyday Super Food.

First, line a small bowl with a 12-inch sheet of plastic wrap.

You'll need one sheet of plastic wrap for each egg you're poaching. If you want, you can just use the same bowl over and over again, taking the finished egg parcels out every time and setting them aside on a plate.


Bring a pot of water to a simmer*, and drop the eggs in one at a time. Cook for 6 minutes.

*If you have a thermometer, simmering water is 185 - 200°F. There should be tiny bubbles rising to the surface, but no big, rolling bubbles. If your water is boiling, it's too hot and you'll just end up with hard-boiled eggs.


Plastic Wrap Poached Eggs

Makes 6 eggs

Cooking spray

6 large eggs


6 (12-inch) sheets heatproof plastic wrap

6 very small bowls

1 medium pot

1 large metal spoon (preferably slotted)


Lay a sheet of plastic wrap over each bowl, so that the sheet is pressed into the center of the bowl but there's still plenty of overhang around the edges. Spray the center of each sheet with nonstick spray, then crack an egg into each bowl, in the center of each piece of plastic wrap. Pull in the sides of the plastic wrap and use your fingers to make sure there's no air around the eggs as you twist and then tie the plastic wrap to make tight parcels.

In a medium pan, bring at least four inches of water to a simmer. Carefully drop all the egg parcels into the simmering water, and cook for 6 minutes. Remove the egg parcels from the water with a slotted spoon and set aside on a plate. Let sit for about a minute, just so they're cool enough to handle. Carefully cut the parcels right under the knot, making sure not to puncture the egg. Unpeel the rest of the plastic wrap, and serve! We put ours on English muffins with Canadian bacon and melted cheese, but you can do whatever you're ~feeling~.

...but it's also a great fuss-free way to make breakfast for just yourself.
