FYI, A Lot Of Pop Stars Hate Their Own Iconic Songs

K, but can you just sing them for us?

1. Selena Gomez thinks "Come & Get It" sounds like a Rihanna reject.

youtube.com

Even though "Come & Get It" is a certified dance-floor bop and reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, Selena Gomez told EW earlier this year she doesn't like performing her 2013 hit because it "doesn't sound like her song." Instead, Selena thinks the anthem sounds like a "Rihanna reject" (which it is!!!).

2. Ariana Grande hated "Bang Bang" after she first recorded it.

youtube.com

Yes, "Bang Bang" is technically Jessie J's song BUT that's only because Ariana originally "hated" the song. In an interview with Billboard, Executive VP of Republic Records Wendy Goldstein revealed that the top five Hot 100 hit was originally written as a solo Ariana track but the pop star ended up "hating" the song after she recorded it. (However, after she heard her vocals cut with Nicki's and Jessie's, she wanted the song back. 💀)

3. Lorde thinks "Royals" sounds like a 2006 ringtone.

youtube.com

Even though "Royals" topped the Hot 100 for nine weeks, Lorde thinks her first global smash sounds like an old ringtone! Instead of paraphrasing her savage words about "Royals," here's Lorde's exact quote: "It sounds like a ringtone from a 2006 Nokia. None of the melodies are cool or good. It's disastrous. Awful." If the Lorde says so!

4. Demi Lovato gets bored singing "Give Your Heart a Break" on tour.

youtube.com

During an interview earlier this year with Latina Magazine, Demi Lovato TORCHED her perfect 2011 pop hit "Give Your Heart a Break" by saying she was "tired of singing" the song while on tour. *cries*

5. Madonna will only sing "Like a Virgin" for $30 million.

youtube.com

Admit it — "Like a Virgin" basically invented the VMAs and helped launch Madonna's ~Queen of Pop~ career. Despite the song's pop-culture impact, the Queen has some ill feelings toward her 1984 hit. Back in 2008, Madonna said she's so sick of the song it would take "30 million dollars" for her to sing that song again. (Lucky for us, Madge dished out a version of "Virgin" during her latest world tour, The Rebel Heart Tour.)

6. Mariah Carey thinks "I Don't Wanna Cry" lacks a message.

youtube.com

Out of all of her No. 1 singles (she has 18 of them, ICYMI), it sounds like Mariah's least favorite is the 1991 ballad "I Don't Wanna Cry." What's the reason behind the hate? In an old (un-receipt-able) MTV interview, Mariah stated she doesn't like the song because "it doesn't have a message." THEN WHY DO I CRY WHEN I LISTEN TO IT, MIMI?

7. Miley Cyrus has requested that "Party in the USA" NOT be played in her presence.

youtube.com

Though "Party in the USA" became America's second national anthem when it stormed radios back in 2009, Miley has gone out of her way to avoid hearing her own Hot 100 hit. Back in 2011 at a private party, Miley told the DJ not to play the karaoke classic.

WHY MILEY, WHY?

8. Rihanna doesn't want to perform "a lot" of her past hits.

youtube.com

While discussing her then-upcoming studio album Anti last year, Rihanna revealed when she gets on stage she doesn't want to perform "a lot" of her past hits because they don't "feel like [her]." Makes sense, since "Umbrella" was originally intended for Britney Spears.

9. Mandy Moore thinks fans should be refunded for buying her early music (THIS INCLUDES "CANDY").

youtube.com

In a 2006 interview, Mandy Moore was her biggest critic of her early pop career, saying, "If I had the money, I would give a refund to everyone who bought my first two albums." That's pretty bold, considering these albums gave us the perfect pop bops "Candy" and "I Wanna Be With You."

10. And Lady Gaga straight-up hates "Telephone."

youtube.com

Even though "Telephone" spawned one of Lady Gaga's most-praised music videos (Beyoncé! The choreography! The outfits!) the song ISN'T one of Gaga's personal faves. In an interview with Pop Justice back in 2011, Gaga admitted she "hates" the song, saying, "I hate ‘Telephone.’ Is that terrible to say? It’s the song I have the most difficult time listening to." YOU'VE BEEN A VERY, VERY BAD GIRL, GAGA.
