I don’t know about you but when I first started playing guitar I found it pretty difficult to find songs I could manage. The so called “easy” or “beginner” songs were either too difficult for a complete beginner or they were really boring ones that I had no interest in.
So, I decided to make this list! :)
Now, you need to know how to read tabs for this but you’re on the internet so I reckon you can manage looking that up!
Simply click the link under each image to see the full tabs/chords
1. Anyone Else But You - Moldy Peaches
If Ellen Page and Michael Cera can play it…
It’s pretty much 2 chords all the way through. Very easy chords too:
You’re a part time lover and a full time friend
The monkey on you’re back is the latest trend
I don’t see what anyone can see, in anyone else
This repeats throughout the whole song.
2. Boulevard Of Broken Dreams - Green Day
I know you’d probably rather sing Good Riddance but it’s tricky dammit!
Try this one instead. It actually sounds pretty decent acoustic!
Capo on 1st fret, all you need is 4 chords. If you want super basic you can play through the verses by just strumming down twice for each chord.
Example: Em Em, G G, A A, Em Em would play over:
“I walk a lonely road The only one that I have ever known”
And here’s an AMAZING helpful video showing how it’s done:
3. Call It Off - Tegan and Sara
You’ll need a capo on 3rd for this. And a broken heart…
We’re getting slightly trickier now but don’t be put off!
In the picture is the intro. If you can’t manage it then it still sounds ok if you miss out the G string entirely. You can work your way up to that.
5. That Time - Regina Spektor
You only need one string for this! (the E string which is the one nearest your face… assuming you’re playing a right handed guitar)
It looks odd at first but if you listen to the song it’ll make perfect sense!
6. Dancing In The Dark - Bruce Springsteen
This is actually the Amy MacDonald cover version (which you should check out because it’s amazing) and it’s a much slower version intended to be acoustic.
Basically Em G repeated then C Am repeated. And a couple of Ds thrown in. Easy!
(Note: You can sing Tegan and Sara’s version with these chords too)
7. Don’t You Forget About Me - Simple Minds
5 chords but they’re easy ones. Please note in the link I gave the chord on the second line between “doubts” and “giving” should actually be A.
(PSST! If like me you find it difficult to make your fingers stretch properly to play A it sounds ok if all 3 fingers are on the 2nd fret)
10. Since U Been Gone - Kelly Clarkson
First of all, it’s “you’ve” Kelly! It’s YOU’VE.
Now, it’s only easy until the chorus so when you get to that bit just throw your guitar across the room and scream the words instead because you’ve been WRONGED DAMMIT and now you can BREATHE FOR THE FIRST TIIIIIIIME!
Or y’know, you could switch to playing the chords instead… (click the link under the pic)

I’d love to hear about all the awesome songs out there that are super easy to play! When you first start out it’s so frustrating only being able to play a really small amount of songs that you probably don’t even like.
And one more thing…
These songs are all in standard tuning (hooray!) but you might need a capo. If you don’t have one just use a pencil and an elastic band :)
