Demi Lovato Was Asked About Her Song "29" Amid Speculation That She Shaded Wilmer Valderrama On It And Said "The Song Says It All"

It was speculated that she had shaded Wilmer Valderrama because of the age gap between them on her new song, "29."

Demi Lovato is clearing the air around her new single, "29."

If you recall, a snippet of the song surfaced earlier this month and had everyone talking because the lyrics appeared to include references to her ex-boyfriend, Wilmer Valderrama.

On the song, Demi sings about a past relationship between a 17- and 29-year-old, which lines up with how old Demi and Wilmer were when they met. "Thought it was a teenage dream/Just a fantasy/But was it yours or mine? 17, 29" she sings at a point.

Recently, she talked to Zane Lowe of Apple Music about the song and the meanings behind it.

“When I turned 29, I remember I was on vacation and I just realized I’m 29 now, and it put things into perspective," said Demi, who turned 29 last August. "It put everything into perspective."

"And I’m very careful with the way that I answer these questions because I feel like the song says it all," she continued. "I don’t have to say too much, to be honest, but turning 29 was a huge eye-opener for me. And then, going into treatment and having realizations led to my transformation, my release of the emotion that was put into this song."

Demi, as you might be aware, is referring to her past drug use, for which she went to rehab in 2021.

She added: "I would be lying if I said I didn’t have a ton of anxiety about putting out this song. I just said, ‘I have to go for this. I have to own my truth.’ Yeah. And I do still walk that line very finely. I’ve learned that sometimes saying less is more. And it’s taken me to 30 years old to maybe learn that, but here I am approaching the way that I express myself differently in front of the media because it’s okay to have boundaries.”
