The Top 10 Most Bingeable Movie Franchises

Since the dawn of Netflix the way movies and television are viewed has greatly changed. No longer do we have to wait a week in between episodes of our favorite shows. Technology has given us the gift to finish entire years’ worth of entertainment in a few days. But should this gift be limited to simply television? Movies have always been the bigger brother of television with more well-known actors, larger budgets, bigger scale stories, and so much more. Television, on the other hand, usually boasts multiple different stories with an overall storyline making them more bingeable right? Well, there are several movies out there that connect with one another creating a bingeable world that we are passing up to watch The Office for the fourteenth time. Fear not, for we are here to help. We have painstakingly worked to bring you the ten most bingeable movie franchises in cinema history. Unfortunately for the sake of time we have immediately eliminated Star Wars, Harry Potter, James Bond, and the MCU. These are amazing franchises that all should watch, but binging may be a bit much. Let’s go.

10. Thriller: Kill Bill (2003-2004)

Quentin Tarantino has become one of the most well-known directors in Hollywood. Although he has stated that all of his films take place in the same universe, they are not directly connected. The exception to this rule in the Tarantinoverse is Kill Bill. Kill Bill does have a sequel and an announced third movie that (due to recent revelations) will never happen. Kill Bill is extremely violent (see Quentin Tarantino) but also boasts amazing writing, acting, directing, and cinematography. Do not miss out on this one.

9. Animated: Shrek (2001-2010)

Animated films are a bit different from live action in that they tend to have sequels and spinoffs. It is for this reason that it is very hard to pick only one franchise for this category. Toy Story is an easy pick, but Pixar films were set aside to make room for Shrek. While other animated film series work hard to give their viewers the feels, Shrek limits this trope to keep piling on fun. Don’t get us wrong, there are several layers to these films (they are like onions) but they are mostly a fun time. Plus, if you watched these as a child it is time to go back and binge watch to get all the adult humor that you missed before.

8. Action: John Wick (2014 - 2019)

John Wick is one of those franchises that seems to come from nowhere and knock everyone out. The first John Wick film blew everyone away in 2014 with its intense action sequences, exhilarating story line, and foundational world building. This was continued in John Wick 2 with the Continental Hotel and the introduction of an assassin economic system. This is a series to binge now so that you can dive headfirst into the fandom before the third film comes out in 2019.

7. Horror: Halloween (1978-2002)

Horror films are very similar to animated films in that there are usually several sequels that follow the original (this is usually the only similarity between animated and horror movies). It is for that reason that this is also a hard genre to choose one franchise. Although there are several great contenders in this genre Halloween took the title. Halloween has everything; a (maybe) superhuman villain, a film that has nothing to do with the original series, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michelle Williams, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, AND LL Cool J. Plus there is a reboot that will take place after the first film coming in 2018 so don’t miss out on the prime storyline!

6. Science Fiction: The Planet of the Apes (2011-2017)

It is rare that a remake is as good as the original (we are looking at you Planet of the Apes from 2001). The new Planet of the Apes trilogy is not actually a remake of the original, but instead a prequel. This means that if you love the original Apes films you can binge this new reimagining and then slingshot yourself right into the old stuff. On the other hand, this trilogy holds up all on its own and could be laying the groundwork to enter remake territory in the future.

5. Nostalgic: Back to the Future (1985-1990)

If you are ever in need for some classic 1980’s nostalgia look no further. Back to the Future broke new ground with references, fashion, and slang terms making it one of pop culture’s juggernauts. Back to the Future made Time Travel fun for all generations from those who grew up with the film to their children who are now experiencing it for the first time. This classic is one everybody should binge. Just try not to get upset when you realize real life 2015 is not as cool as Back to the Future 2015.

4. Spy: Mission Impossible (1996-2018)

Mission Impossible was almost excluded from this list due to time. But it did make the list clocking in at just over ten hours of screen time. This will increase when Fallout hits theaters in just a few months. We decided to include this franchise due to the fact that these movies tie into each other so well with storylines and characters recurring throughout. This trend seems to be continued in Fallout with several characters showing up in the trailer. To prepare for the July release date we recommend binging these films ASAP.

3. Harrison Ford: Indiana Jones (1981-1989)

No, you did not misread the above genre. We included a genre for Harrison Ford. With films like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Blade Runner, and the Jack Ryan movies Ford deserves his own genre. With all the aforementioned movie franchises Indiana Jones stands out as the most bingeable. These films are fun, witty, action-adventures that are enjoying to go along on. Indy is one of cinema’s favorite sons and is set to return in 2020 so binge now! Oh, and if you are unfamiliar with the franchise just know there is a fourth film released in 2008 called Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Yeah, skip that one.

2. Mafia: The Godfather (1972-1990)

One of the greatest movie trilogies of all time; The Godfather, makes the list. This film is the pinnacle of all mafia family movies and television and has set the tone for all that would follow. The films are all directed by Nicolas Cage’s uncle Francis Ford Coppola and star Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaten, and Robert De Niro respectively. This film franchise is a must see for any fan of cinema and is definitely bingeable.

When looking at Superhero movies the genre has become saturated over the last few decades. The Blade trilogy seems to have revived the genre, Marvel has set a formula for the genre, the DCEU has become one of the most divisive franchises ever, but dare we say that the Dark Knight trilogy perfected the genre. Batman Begins was an amazing origin film showing how Batman came to be and The Dark Knight returns was a fitting end to the trilogy. The Dark Knight itself is not only the greatest superhero movie of all times, but one of the best movies in general.
