Sounding Like A Kardashian Can Cost You A Job

Vocal fry sounds like a new beauty fad involving delicious olive oil, but it is actually a speech pattern that can cost you a job opportunity.

When listening to Kim Kardashian or Britney Spears, you can hear a prime examples of the growing trend. As they speak, their voice descends into a lower register while completing a sentence. This results in disjointed bursts emanating from the back of the throat that gives the speaker a creaky sound or vocal fry.

Florida Atlantic University discovered the habit, which typically appears in women, can impact how others view the speaker. The research and study shows women who had vocal fry were viewed as less trustworthy, less competent, and less educated. In a professional environment, the creak can actually make you less hirable.

A 2011 'Science Magazine' study found that the guttural vibration can cost you a job opportunity, but it can actually be a "social link" formed between members of a group. An example of the different responses can be found in entertainment outlets like radio.

Popular music stations will welcome announcers who have the staccato creak, while stations, such as NPR, don't.
