Travel Safety Tips That You Should Not Ignore

Travelling can be very exciting since you get to see new places and experience new activities. However, travelling can also be dangerous since you are in a new location. Even if you are seasoned traveller, you should make sure that you are safe whenever you travel. Here are the travel safety tips that you should not be ignoring.

1. Avoid Marches and Demonstrations

For some people, it can be exciting to join in a March or demonstration. However, when you are travelling to a foreign land, you should avoid them. Joining in could risk your visa, and the demonstration may not end peacefully. The best option is to stay back and leave quickly if you are in an area that is going to become a March or demonstration site.

2. Secure Your Laptop and Other Devices

When you are traveling, a laptop or other devices are most likely the most expensive items that you are carrying around. Many times, securing these items is little harder because thieves usually steal these higher valued items. Laptop locks are usually a good deterrent since thieves need to damage the outer case of the laptop, and most shops will not buy them if they are damaged.

The bag that you carry your devices in can also affect if your items are stolen or not. A fancy case can set you apart from the other commuters, but it also is a flashing sign that you are carrying an expensive laptop. Instead, try to get a laptop bag that looks like a backpack.

You also need to be careful about where you use your laptop. You should not be broadcasting that you have a laptop. The best option is to only use your laptop when you have to and make sure you notice everyone who is sitting around you while you do so.

3. Never Let Anyone Distract You

It does not matter the age of the person, but do not let anyone come up to you. They could be begging or have a piece of cardboard or paper in front of them. You should push this away and then make sure that all your belongings are secure. They use many tactics to try to distract you, so they or a partner can get your items.

4. Have an Escape Route at All Times

When you are walking in unfamiliar areas, you should be taking note of specific landmarks like buildings or amenities. If you feel scared, you should head to the closest ‘friendly’ place and wait until it is safe or call for help. Shops are the best options because you can make calls, or browse around for some time without getting kicked out.

5. Try to Blend in, or at Least Try Avoiding Standing Out

One of the best ways of minimising your risk is to blend in with the locals or to stand out less. Find out how the locals dress and dress like them. You should also avoid having your camera around your neck and having a tourist book or map sticking out because these are dead giveaways that you are not from the area.

Traveling will always have some amount of risk involved with it. However, you can minimise your risk by being smart and knowing the common tricks that thieves use.

6. Don't get Conned out of Money

Before you even start your holiday, finding a reputable website to compare flight deals can be easy enough. Just make sure that the travel agent you are buying from offers securities such as ATOL protection.

Once you are on your holiday be weary of scammers and pickpockets. More than likely you will stand out from the crowd, which will make you an easy target. Learn a few words in the language of the country you are visiting. Learning words such as 'leave me alone' will more than likely shock the criminal and deter them, whilst highlighting to locals that you are in danger.
