This Forest Girl Fashion Subculture Is Truly Enchanting
Cue fairytale motifs, vintage dresses and lots of layering.

Mori Girl is a fashion subculture that originated from Japan. It literally translates to "forest girl".
The style features loose dresses, earthy colors and vintage inspired motifs.

The founder of the community, Choco created a checklist for the archetypical Mori Girl, here (we like to think of them as guidelines though).

Most of the specific Mori Girl fashion lines are sold in Japan. But there are ways to achieve this style.

Shops like YesStyle, Anthropologie and Forever 21 occasionally have pieces that fit into the Mori Girl style. Etsy is the place for jewelry and accessories.
For a list of shops, check the Mori Girl shop list here.
The right silhouettes and fabric will help you achieve the ethereal Mori Girl look!

Layering is really important! It gives depth and texture to your coordinates.

For weather appropriate outfits, think about adding matching shawls or boleros.
How to layer like a Mori Girl:

Tutorial Summary:
1. Start off with a white colored A-line dress
2. Wear a lace skirt underneath your dress (to exaggerate the A-line silhouette)
3. Throw on a cardigan
4. Drape a scarf or shawl over your shoulders
5. Finally add a quirky bag
Natural colors work really well, like green, cream and brown.

Other colors options: ivory, burgundy, blue, light grey, dusty pink, etc.
For shoes, boots and closed toe shoes are perfect.

And pair them with cute stockings.
Jewelry is often delicate and tiny.

The Choco checklist says that Mori Girls prefer gold over silver, but most girls tend to wear both tones. Antique gold or brass jewelry is acceptable, too.
Other pieces of jewelry seen on Mori Girls include pocket watches, key necklaces, dainty pendants, etc.
The quirkier your purse, the better.

You can finally buy that novelty animal shaped purse! Leather satchels are a good starting bag that'll match most outfits.
Floral headpieces go well with the forest girl aesthetic.

Look into ribbons, vintage hats and deer antler headbands for a similar look.

Makeup is usually light and airy. Think pastel and netural colors.

We recommend groomed brows, light eyeliner and a dust of blush. For some color, apply a nude or pink matte/semi-matte lipstick. And of course, don't forget your foundation or B.B. cream for glowing skin.
Buns, braids or ponytails are on point. Or just let your hair loose! Girls with naturally curly and wavy hair rejoice!

A short bob and bangs also work!
If you have colorful hair, you can still pull this style off!

Some nail polish recommendations:

Or you can also just apply a clear topcoat, if you're not a nail polish sort of girl.
Perfume should never be overwhelming. Floral and earthy scents are preferred.

The Mori Girl lifestyle encourages girls to slow down and appreciate the outdoors.

Other typical activities include: reading, sketching, photography, crafting, gardening and more.
Mori Girl style can transfer to your home decor.

Buy unique pieces at vintage stores or flea markets. Wood furniture is great because there are different hues to match your tastes. Real (or fake) flowers can brighten up your neutral palette.
