A Step-By-Step Guide To Making A BuzzFeed Post

So you've joined the BuzzFeed Community and you want to make your own post, but don't know where to begin. Don't worry, we've got you covered!

Posted on

Before you get started, please have a look at our Guidelines! We have a strict 'No Haters' policy, so if you're trolling or being a jerk, your account or post might be removed.

If you are a brand, organization, political/public figure, or if you're posting something self-promotional, BuzzFeed Community is probably not the place for you. BuzzFeed is no longer supporting new posts from Community Brand Publisher accounts, which include any accounts with a political, commercial, or promotional agenda. You can learn more about our new guidelines for brands and Community accounts here.

First things first — once you've signed up for an account, you can make a new post by going to www.buzzfeed.com/post.

This will load our "CMS" (content management system, or posting interface tool).

We have three different kinds of posts:

BuzzFeed / Via Buzzfeed

If you're making a numbered or ranking list, there's no need to enter the numbers yourself in the headlines. Just click the "Numbered" or "Countdown" options and BuzzFeed's CMS will number them for you! If you don't want every item numbered, that's OK — just uncheck the "Show item number?" option after uploading the item you want unnumbered.

Please note, all posts require a title, description, and thumbnails. Make the description short and sweet — something fun that will make people want to read your post! Thumbnails need to be at least 625 x 415.

This "box" that you see is called a sub buzz, and it is your best friend.

BuzzFeed

Each sub buzz is a distinct item! If you want to add a video or image, you'll have to load each one into a fresh sub buzz.

In order from left to right we have:

Text: If you don't want images or anything besides text in this sub buzz, this is what you use. "Headline" is the bigger, bolder text you see and "Add some text..." is the smaller text you see.

Image: This is where you add pictures and GIFs! You can either drag and drop them, or upload them from your computer.

Embed: Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, videos, and other embeddable links/codes.

Link: If you want to include a relatable link at the bottom like this.

Quiz: If you want to make awesome quizzes!

Want to add images (including GIFs!) to your post? Of course you do! You can do that using the "Image" tab.

BuzzFeed

First, save the image or GIF to your desktop. Then you can upload them. Either use the "Upload" button, drag and drop the image into the box, or simply click in the "Drop Image(s) Here" gray box!

Then copy the URL of the tweet.

BuzzFeed

Protip: This is also how to add an Instagram picture! Just copy the Instagram URL and follow the same instructions.

Want to embed a Tumblr post? Just paste the Tumblr URL (permalink) into a fresh sub buzz like you would a tweet or Instagram link! The Tumblr post will automatically load!

Protip: Tumblr embeds are GREAT for threads and GIFs because GIFS automatically play on mobile, and mobile is HUGE. Always remember that people are looking at posts on their phones way more than on a desktop.

If you want to add a YouTube or Vimeo video, just paste the URL of the video into a fresh sub buzz and the video will automatically load — no need to go through the work of getting the embed code!

BuzzFeed

Protip: We also support URLs and embed codes from YouTube, Vimeo, Soundcloud, Rdio, Spotify, Facebook, Hulu, Google Video, LiveLeak, MetaCafe, DailyMotion, or MySpace Video.

Community members can now make quizzes, too! Check out our detailed guide on how to make a quiz here.

BuzzFeed

Formatting is also really easy.

BuzzFeed

We have also just added the option to use keyboard shortcuts! Just highlight the text and press "Command + b" to bold or "Command + i" to italicize.

Want to rearrange the order of your post? Just use the up or down arrow buttons to move them.

Pro tip: You can also rearrange the order by changing the number in the little box! (So where it says "9" you can change that to "1" and it will jump to the top of your list.)

You'll need to upload a thumbnail image before you can publish your post. This image must be at least 625x415 pixels! To add an image, simply drag and drop it into the thumbnail box or use the "Upload From Computer" option.

BuzzFeed

You can also select from the images in your post as long as they're big enough.

Finally, if you'd like to "suggest" your post for Community editors to check out for promotion, click the suggest button!

BuzzFeed

The Suggest button is located directly underneath the Thumbnail upload. If you do not see it, it's no big deal. It could just be a glitch/bug. Whether you suggest or not, editors will ALWAYS see your post! If they like it, they will promote it.

Once you are promoted, you will receive Cat Power! All users with Cat Power will show up in the Just Launched feed.

BuzzFeed

When you first sign up for BuzzFeed, you will have one opportunity to Suggest a post each day. After your first post is accepted (promoted by our team), your Cat Power will go from 0 to 1, and over time, as more of your posts are accepted, your Cat Power will increase, giving you more opportunities to Suggest posts for the Community page in addition to other cool perks and privileges.

You can follow the BuzzFeed Community on Facebook and Twitter. You can also find the BuzzFeed Support Team on Twitter.

Reminder: BuzzFeed is no longer supporting new posts from Community Brand Publisher accounts, which include any accounts with a political, commercial, or promotional agenda. You can learn more about our new guidelines for brands and Community accounts here.
