View this photo on Instagram Instagram: @kendalljenner It was a day like any other. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping, my avocado was perfectly ripe. It felt--at least for a moment--as though I knew what life meant. Then it happened. She was wearing a red hoodie and black yoga pants. Her hair was in pigtails, but she also had a headband on for some reason. There was a tiny plate. A tea plate, maybe. A song I didn't know played. The woman in the red hoodie danced in a circular motion, holding the tiny plate all the while. Then she danced again, and again on loop. I was transfixed. I'm still not sure how much time I lost that first day. It's been about five weeks since I first saw Kendall Jenner's Instagram video and I'm still fascinated by it. What was her intention in posting it? Was it for her friends? For her fans? Does it refer to something or is it just one of those "funny" things 20-year-olds post to their social media accounts that I simply won't get? I've had multiple (mostly one-sided) conversations with people about said post, and I still can't seem to wrap my head around it. WHAT IS THIS VIDEO? WHAT DOES IT MEAN? I think about this at least once a day. The little things get to me more than anything. Like her outfit, for example. I see that she's just trying to be cool and cozy in her red hoodie and yoga pants. That's fine. The pigtails are also fine. I mean, she's only 20 years old and has a lot of hair to pull off her face. I get it. But why the polka-dot headband? Does she have that many baby hairs? Does she not have any bobby pins lying around? Is that even a headband or is it a bandana? Why is there a bow on the top? Was this some kind of fashion statement or is this just Kendall caught in a moment of disarray? Is this some kind of Stars!-They're-Just-Like-Us! post that is supposed to make me think that she was in the middle of a nail-painting party and Netflix binge? I just don't know. Then there's the dance itself. Kendall starts by the kitchen counter, seemingly unaware that she's about to be filmed. But suddenly, not unlike a dog that just spotted a stranger across the street, Kendall looks to camera and urgently moves forward in the frame. She starts to dance. She seems hesitant at first, simply sliding her hands back and forth to the beat of the song, not altogether sure if she's doing it right. Then a spark of confidence appears and she starts dancing with great enthusiasm and, some might say, more rhythm. Was it in her all along? Did she find it in the short journey from the counter to the table? Did someone in the room smile or give her a much needed thumbs up? I don't know. But what WAS that dance? It began with some apprehensive hand motion, then turned into an elaborate I'm-a-little-tea-pot swivel, and ended in hip gyrations that I understand are meant to be seductive. It just didn't make sense. And while the outfit and dance confuse me, what really haunts me is the presence of the tiny plate. I've concluded thus far that it is likely a tea plate or, possibly, a large saucer. Either way, Kendall was clearly in the midst of preparing something when the video was being recorded. So, my question is this: why didn't she put the tiny plate down? The counter was right there. She passed right in front of the kitchen table. Why is it still in her hand? If she knew that she was going to be recorded, why was it in her hand in the first place? Then she had the nerve to drag it into her dance like it was supposed to be there all along. She twirled and twirled and shook her hips and held the tiny plate like it was a baton or a ribbon and I just don't know what to do with that. It's very possible that I never will.
