How To Make Vegan Fish From The Tropical Fruit Soursop (Guanabana)

Soursop/ Guanabana is a tropical fruit that, when ripe is used to make drinks and desserts. When unripe it can be converted into steaks that resemble flaky white fish.

So Vegan Fish is finally something worth writing home about …'Dear Mom….." really it is not soy, it is not mushroom it is not something that you are going to beat into conformity and say be a fish dammit….let that salt water be your best friend….No. Vegan Soursop Fish is something that already has the texture of fish from the get go. It is a fruit…No it is not jackfruit but it is something called Soursop or Guanabana. When ripe it has a very strong tropical flavor and when I say tropical flavor it is like the strength of a guava but not the same smell. When unripe it doesn't have much of a flavor which makes it a perfect canvas for seasonings, batter and breading.

Here is what it looks like and here is a nice Wikipedia link here that tells you more about the fruit

In its ripe form we make smoothies and drinks out of it and because the flesh is so rich it can be used to make ice-cream without the use of a thickener. The ripe flesh is very juicy and cottony. You either love it or you don't. I am not crazy over it, it is equivalent to an average guy with a rock star heart, you may not go to him at first but when you get to know him you are sold…yes something like that.

    Why Veganize Fish?

I have been toying with making vegan fish for a while because I am Barbadian and we do fish right. Culturally I was raised on a diet of primarily fish and it is seasoned to perfection. Unlike some people outside of the region fish was never this stinky food you passed on. It was the most tastiest protein you could have due to the seasoning blends that we used. I will get to seasoning blends in a bit but let me stay on my soap box a bit more. Giving up fish was the worst part of being vegan when I went vegan ten years ago. Omg it is ten years! Anyways as my journey continued I did not care for it anymore. I got over that but now this would be a special occasion eat or something I could serve to an omnivore so they can keep their mouth shut. It is something I would do for the art of it personally. Like tada….I made fish from fruit… You will love it. Did you know I never tried that pulled pork jackfruit thing yet? From the reports I am getting the texture is there but the taste is not as it relies on the bbq sauce and seasoning. The taste for the vegan fish is there and the texture. It is so true to the flavor and texture that I feel bad eating it. I feel like I am having some fried butter fish or something. Butter fish is a river fish from South America. The fact is that the fish we are getting has loads of mercury in it so why bother to eat it. Have soursop fish instead.
