When you're in university, you have the ability to customize your schedule. Take advantage of this opportunity because it rarely happens in the real world! Are you a night-owl or a morning person? Remember to play to your strengths as much as possible.

The Add/Drop period is also a time where you can pick the grading option for an elective course.

Remember, you won't be able to make any adjustments to your schedule after the Add/Drop deadline!

Be Realistic

Strive for balance, and avoid overwhelming yourself with classes and extracurricular activities from the get-go. Make sure to get some sleep, and remember, midterms really are just around the corner!

During Add/Drop, everyone is trying to build their schedules at the same time. Be patient with Minerva; sometimes the website just needs a little more time to load. Remember that courses will open, close, and open again during the next two weeks. Check Minerva regularly and your chances of getting into the courses you want will increase!

Shop Around

Go on a shopping spree! Visit some courses, speak with professors and teaching assistants, and see if the course is really for you.

Unfortunately, not all students have the luxury of shopping around due to required courses, but please know there are plenty of ways to 'shop around' and learn more about different subjects. You can talk to professors and fellow students at academic events and talks throughout the year to help you broaden your academic horizons.

Follow Your Heart & Try New Things!

Choose classes for yourself, not just because your best friends are also taking them. School is your time to try new things, explore new interests, and get outside of your bubble.

Even if your schedule does not allow for any electives, try a SSMU Mini Course; they're a fun and inexpensive way to make friends and learn something new!

See an Advisor

Advisors are a great resource during Add/Drop. They can help you plan your work load, choose your classes, and make sure you're on track to graduate. Be sure to check in at least once a year!

School is in Session

If you get into a class after the first day, it is your job to get caught up! Check here to see when classes start this semester. Make sure to email the professor, speak to your TAs, and make up anything (readings, assignments, etc.) that you may have missed.

With school starting, there are so many pieces of your life that may feel out of control. This is normal, especially if you have had a relaxing summer break. Remember to get organized, get plenty of sleep, drink water, and wear deodorant. Control what you can, be kind to people, and take everything one day at a time!
