20 Things No One Can Prepare You For When You Move To NYC

After moving to NYC for the summer, I have discovered many things that are super out of the ordinary that New Yorkers find to be the norm. Enjoy.

Posted on

1. People walk fast and they hate it when you get in their way.

If you walk even slightly slower than the average soccer mom exercising in your neighborhood, you might want to reconsider moving to NYC.

2. They stand extremely close to the subway when it approaches.

I don't know if they realize it is a LARGE MOVING OBJECT.

3. They are also all professional sardines players.

This is a skill you will learn fast, or you will get on the train earlier.

4. They are immune to the putrid smells of the street.

5. They think it is perfectly normal to wear sunglasses in the subway and other places that are not outside.

TAKE THEM OFF YOU ARE NOT BEING BLINDED BY THE SUN.

6. They also think they are invincible.

Taxi's WILL run you over.

7. Everyone is very loyal (defensive) of their boroughs.

Manhattan. The Bronx. Brooklyn. Queens. New Jersey. Staten Island.

8. The South is a magical place.

If you tell someone you are from Texas you can expect the typical "Do you ride a horse to school?" questions to be asked next.

9. With that being said, queso is a foreign concept.

Yeah. I know. Deal breaker.

So is ranch dressing.

Try and refrain from crying. They just don't know any better.

10. But the food is insanely good.

You want one of everything most of the time but can barely afford one thing.

11. Forget about saving money if you plan on living in the city.

Every meal is at least $20.

12. Groceries are expensive.

You'll get over it once you figure out how to go without cheese sticks for two weeks.

13. You will walk EVERYWHERE.

14 blocks becomes no big deal.

14. People who perform in the Subway are no joke.

The will beat the hell out of those paint containers if it's the last thing they do.

15. Air conditioners will leak on you.

No that isn't rain....

16. Never look people in the eye.

Don't even think about smiling at them

17. Wear sandals & flip flops at your own risk.

Your feet will cramp and it will hurt.

18. Rats & bedbugs are a real thing.

You will develop OCD about having them after you hear a couple horror stories.

19. Brunch is an event all on it's own.

It's an all day thing. Especially if you call it drunch.

20. And last but not least, Holidays are on crack here.

FOURTH OF JULY EVERYDAY AND CHRISTMAS AND HALLOWEEN AND ST. PATTYS DAY AND THANKSGIVING AND FLAG DAY.
