I Figured Out Why All Millennials Love Watching HGTV

HGTV / Via

If you are anything like me, you could probably waste away an entire Saturday by bingeing on repeats of House Hunters. Thanks to this, I am now well versed in the struggles of load bearing walls, the proper use of shiplap, and how to turn an old trunk into a bar cart and sell it for profit to gullible buyers at a flee market. No shame in our game.

But what is it about HGTV that has we young people glued to our screens? Well, I've finally figured it out and it's not just because we like to stare at the Property Brothers (ok sometimes we do.) Here it is. Brace yourselves. Millennials love watching HGTV because we all want things that we can't have.

If you haven't caught on already, let me explain. Over the years as Generation X is on the way out and Millennials are now the stars of the show, we have seen the cost of living go way up, the price of owning a home go way up, and of course a millennial's favorite expense, student loans...go way up! With all this inevitable debt and mounting costs headed our way, the only way we know we will ever have a house as nice and as well decorated as they have on Fixer in our dreams.

There you have it! We give HGTV their impressive ratings as a subconscious form of day dreaming. But hey, a little escapism is healthy right? Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go pay my student loans and cry while I watch Home Town.
