This Is My Letter To The Gluten Free Fad

Thank you. Thank you for the better tasting brownies, the delicious cereal and the half aisle in the grocery store. Most of all, thank you for the awareness.

This is my letter to the Gluten Free Fad

Thank you. Thank you for increasing the amount of food I'm able to eat. The delicious cereals I forgot the flavor of and thank you for the half aisle in the grocery store I know it will be okay to shop in.

However, I don't thank you for what you have done toward me. The stares I get, the questions at restaurants, and the plain confusion from friends because I am not on a strict gluten free diet, because I want to be part of the fad.

My life with celiac disease has been anything but easy. I dropped a significant amount of weight, my mood swings lasted hours and into days, my energy decreased, my bones got weak (which was anything but great for a student athlete) and I couldn't eat food without my body completely shutting down.

I've come a long way from those times and still struggle daily, but the struggle is easier because of you Gluten Free fad. There are no more carbs, no more bread as appetizers before meals, there are no more Italian restaurants that I could stuff my face at and there were no more hot, melted biscuits for breakfast, but there is gluten free cereal that I can now make bowls of. There is pizza that I can eat four slices of. There are buns I can use to make the juiciest cheeseburger with. The options have increased because of you Gluten Free fad.

The days are few now because of you, when I'm curled up in bed physically not able to move, weeping for the pain to stop, slowly losing weight from the little food that I've eaten.

Thank you for bringing light to the pain and horrors that us celiacs' deal with on a daily basis. I thank you for decreasing our chances of our bodies shutting down. I thank you for better tasting brownies. I thank you for being able to have a normal sandwich. I thank you for calming my anxiety of going out to dinner with friends, because of the new menu options. I thank you for allowing us to live as much of a normal life as possible.

    Thank you for increasing awareness.
