McKay Coppins Named BuzzFeed Political Editor

Reporter promoted to lead site’s acclaimed political coverage

New York, December 11, 2012 – The leading social news organization announced today that McKay Coppins, BuzzFeed’s political reporter most recently leading the site’s coverage of Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign, has been named Political Editor and will work with editor-in-chief Ben Smith to shape BuzzFeed’s acclaimed political coverage.

“We have an opportunity in 2013 to turn the momentum we gained during the 2012 election toward coverage of President Obama’s second term, the Republican Party’s soul searching, and other topics on which we can do distinctive, original reporting,” said Ben Smith, BuzzFeed’s Editor-in-Chief. Smith continued, “McKay was one of the breakout political reporters this cycle and is primed to run one of the best politics teams out there. I couldn’t be more thrilled to have him as our Political Editor.”

“My colleagues at BuzzFeed Politics are some of the best reporters in the business, and I’m really excited to work with them in this new role,” said Coppins. “We worked hard during the campaign to become an essential part of the national political conversation and I think 2013 gives us the chance to flex our muscle in covering Washington with regular scoops and sharp, high-impact enterprise reporting. It’s going to be a fun year,” Coppins continued.

Coppins will continue to regularly cover national politics, the Republican Party, and the major figures in the conservative movement from New York.
