New York, NY — August 28, 2018 — BuzzFeed today announced that it has named Rhonda Powell as its new General Counsel, a role in which she will oversee business and legal affairs for the global digital media company. Powell joins BuzzFeed from Complex Media, where she served on the company’s senior management team as Senior Vice President, Business & Legal Affairs and Chief Legal Officer. Powell will be based in BuzzFeed’s New York office and report directly to its founder and CEO, Jonah Peretti.

“I'm very excited to welcome Rhonda to BuzzFeed and know we will benefit tremendously from her experience in helping media companies grow, diversify their business lines, and break new ground,” said Peretti. “Rhonda’s leadership will be critical in every area of our constantly evolving business, whether we’re forming new partnerships, working with talent in new ways, or delivering hard-hitting investigative journalism.”

“BuzzFeed’s unique combination of thoughtful, serious news and documentaries; useful informational tools for daily living; and whimsical, playful content place the company in a unique position to both reflect and drive the next generation of American media,” said Powell. “I am energized by the intention and optimism demonstrated by Jonah and the entire Buzzfeed family, and am looking forward to using my skills and experience for the benefit of this organization.”

As Senior Vice President, Business & Legal Affairs and Chief Legal Officer at Complex, Powell led a team of professional and administrative staff that supported all areas of the company’s digital media business. Before Complex, Powell spent 12 years in Business & Legal Affairs roles at Scripps Networks, most recently leading a team that supported the company’s Digital properties and operations. Prior to assuming that role, she led a team that supported Food Network and Cooking Channel.

Powell started her career in the corporate departments of LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene & MacRae and Proskauer Rose LLP, where she worked on transactions in the communications, media, biotechnology and e-commerce areas. Powell also spent several years in the legal department of Reuters America Inc., where she focused on complex commercial transactions.

Powell serves on the Boards of Directors of PowerMyLearning, which has as its core mission the use of technology and creation of partnerships among parents, teachers and children to enhance and enrich the learning experience and the Food Education Fund, which supports Food and Finance High School, the only New York City public school providing students with a comprehensive culinary education in addition to a full academic curriculum.
