BUZZFEED AND SAMSUNG TO HOST SECOND ANNUAL “BUZZFEED QUEER PROM” CELEBRATING LGBTQ+ YOUTH

New York, NY — May 10, 2018 — BuzzFeed today announced plans to host its second annual BuzzFeed Queer Prom in partnership with Samsung. The event will be hosted at Samsung’s first-of-its-kind technology and cultural destination in the heart of New York City’s Meatpacking District, Samsung 837, as a kick-off to their robust cultural events calendar during the month of June. The evening will feature interactive experiences, dancing, special appearances by celebrity allies, BuzzFeed talent and much more. The event will be hosted by BuzzFeed Creators Curly Velasquez and Jazzmyne Jay Robbins.

We are so excited to bring back Queer Prom for the second year in a row to give a night of inclusivity and pure acceptance to LGBTQ+ high schoolers and amazing content to show the rest of the world,” said event co-hosts Curly Velasquez and Jazzmyne Jay Robbins.

LGBTQ+ students from across the country will submit their stories for a chance to be picked to attend Queer Prom. Five high school students will be flown to New York to star in BuzzFeed’s accompanying three-part video series. Viewers will follow the Court on their prom journey as they arrive in New York, get prom makeovers, take part in the official “Prom Kween” crowning ceremony, and dance the night away. Last year’s inaugural Queer Prom was held in Hollywood, Calif. and followed six high school seniors selected from thousands of video submissions to serve as the official Queer Prom Court. Hundreds of high school seniors from across the country attended the event, alongside celebrities including Evan Rachel Wood, Adam Lambert, Daniel Franzese, Mitch Grassi, Scott Hoying, and the Mayor of West Hollywood, Lauren Meister.
Curly Velasquez is a Creator for BuzzFeed’s Latinx brand Pero Like and a Los Angeles-based artist who celebrates all things brown and beautiful. He began his career in fashion working for celebrity photographer David LaChapelle and design icon Jeremy Scott before starting his own line. Jazzmyne Jay Robbins is a Creator for BuzzFeed’s beauty brand As/Is.
