Former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton, a prominent backer of Governor Mitt Romney, said he expects the primary to be a “slog,” the latest sign that Romney’s camp has resigned itself to a near-endless primary.
Bolton made the comment in an interview with WABC’s Aaron Klein, to be aired this evening.Bolton said:
I would certainly prefer as I think most Republicans would that we could wrap this thing up. But I’ll tell you, though, the last thing that would be helpful in doing that is to tell Newt or Rick Santorum or Ron Paul or any of the trailing candidates to get out.
I think this is going to have to be a slog, and I think at some point people who are really concerned about the party’s prospects in November will weigh in privately with the people who are still trailing…
But if it takes a long slog then it takes a long slog. You know, Obama and Hillary Clinton went at it week after week after week in the 2008 campaign and it didn’t damage Obama so much that he couldn’t win in November. So I think I would prefer that we could turn our intention to Obama but if it’s not going to be it’s not going to be. You have to take your politics as they come.
