10. Felix the Cat

First appearance: November 9, 1919

The first pre-Disney cartoon character to make it big time, Felix the Cat first appeared in the 1919 cartoon "Feline Follies." In 2014 DreamWorks Animation purchased the character. The rest is history.

9. Tom Cat

First appearance: February 10, 1940

Created by Hanna Barbera, Tom is known for (1) taking a serious beating from Jerry the mouse, and (2) miraculously surviving each and every time. While most cats have only nine lives, Tom might seriously be the exception.

8. Sylvester

First appearance: September 20, 1941

The most famous cat in the "Looney Tunes" universe, Sylvester is known for two things: his famous saying, "Sufferin Succotash," and trying to eat Tweety Bird.

7. Fifi: Cat Therapist

First appearance: October 10, 2014

Have things on your mind? Need to talk to a professional? "Fifi: Cat Therapist" follows the secret life of a sassy house-cat named Fifi after her owners leave the house. Airing on DreamWorksTV, Fifi tells it like it is as she acts as a therapist to the neighborhood creatures in this animated comedy by Mike Blum (Lilo & Stich).

6. Heathcliff

First appearance: September 3, 1973

A wisecracking cat, Heathcliff is simply known for annoying the manager of the local fish store and the milkman to get milk, bothering the sailors who work on the Tuna Fleet; harassing the dog population; being an informant to the local Dog Catchers, and of course, pursuing female cats. Way to live.

5. The Aristocats

Release date: December 11, 1970

Noted for being the last film project to actually be approved by Walt Disney himself, The Aristocats follows a family of aristocratic cats, and how an alley cat acquaintance helps them after a butler kidnaps them to gain his mistress' fortune which was intended to go to them. Oh, the drama.

4. Garfield

First appearance: June 19, 1978

This is Garfield. The one. The only. You've seen him suction-cupped to the inside of car windows. No introduction needed. Nuff said. Now pass the lasagna.

3. Stimpy

First appearance: August 11, 1991

One half of the titular duo in the classic show "Ren & Stimpy," Stimpson "Stimpy" J. Cat is known for his popular saying "Oh, Joy!" and often portraying high functioning characters such as chefs and scientist in episodes, even though the character has been described as "obese," and "brain-damaged."

2. Hello Kitty

First appearance: 1974

Hello Kitty is a fictional character produced by the Japanese company Sanrio, created by Yuko Shimizu and currently designed by Yuko Yamaguchi. The character is a staple of the kawaii segment of Japanese popular culture and is reportedly worth about $7 billion a year, all without any advertising. Cha-ching!

1. Puss in Boots

First appearance: November 3, 1922 (as a cartoon)

His name is legendary, his adventures and swordsmanship are renowned – just don't distract him with a ball of yarn. He is Puss in Boots. Known for his quick-witted, nimble-footed style, Puss has been making audiences purr since his big screen debut in DreamWorks Animation's Shrek 2, and later getting his own feature film in 2011.
