1. Get A Fitted Suit

If you're still trying to pull off the suit you bought for your high school homecoming, it's time to upgrade to a more modern style. Seek out jackets that fit tight to the shoulder and contour to your body, and flat-front pants with a slim cut and little to no break – everything should look tailored. Never buy a suit straight off the rack. Most major department stores have someone in-house who can fit and tailor the suit for you.

Unless you have dough to drop on multiple suits, don't be as adventurous as Nick is with color and pattern. Grey goes with everything, cranberry does not.

2. Button It Up

Nick's go-to look is a button-down buttoned all the way up to the top. He rocks it both as casual wear and on the red carpet — it's a style that adds an instant drop of cool to your outfit. Button-downs and button-fronts are relatively inexpensive, making them a great way to expand your wardrobe without breaking the bank.

Your closet should have at least one chambray, one flannel and a few oxfords in various colors in rotation. When buying, again look for tailored cuts that sit close to the body without looking tight.

3. Swap Sweaters For Sweatshirts

There are more than just hoodies out there, people! Sweatshirts are slowly creeping up the fashion ladder, with fancier designs making their way into stores. Look out for quilted patterns (see Nick, left), leather overlays, chimney collars, wrap-around hoods (see Nick, right), epaulets, elbow patches, etc.

You can dress these designer jerseys up by layering them over a collared shirt, or dress them down by wearing them on their own. Great for days when you don't quite need a jacket.

4. Cover Up With Cardigans

Nick knows nothing's cozier than a cardigan, the ultimate alternative to a light jacket. Dress up your white T-shirt with a basic cardi, or polish up your look with the shawl collar variety. Just be careful how you style your sweater — you don't want to be mistaken for a college professor ... not that there's anything wrong with that.

5. Leather. Just Leather.

The ultimate cool guy accessory: the leather jacket. It's also an essential piece of outerwear for every guy's collection. Amp up any look with some leather (or faux-leather) — toss it over a T-shirt, a buttoned-up button-down or one of those embellished sweatshirts.

Chances are you're only going to have one leather jacket in your closet, so be thoughtful when purchasing. Pick one that goes with the majority of your wardrobe. If you wear mostly warm tones (reds, oranges), go with black. If you sport cool tones (blues, greens), try brown. If your closet is full-on ROYGBIV-ing it, grey might be for you. And be mindful of style — trendier silhouettes might not last as long as classics, like the motorcycle cut.

6. Slip Into Sneakers

Nick's shoe of choice is a simple sneaker, in white or black. If you're going to buy two pairs of shoes for day-to-day wear, those two are a good bet – they're classics. Black goes with almost everything, and if it doesn't go with black, white will suffice. The sleeker the better.

Black sneaks with white soles also happen to be the fashion trend of the moment —pretty much every men's designer released a pair in 2014. Seriously.

7. Top Off Your Look

Nick's spent the latter half of the year growing out his buzzcut, which meant he wore a lot of hats. Snapbacks are definitely back, and they're an inexpensive way to give a casual look some extra edge. Stay away from logo-heavy ones and instead, grab a trendier style in leather or tweed. Nick's also a fan of the bowler hat, but he's one of very few who can actually pull that off.

If you're not a hat guy, think about other accessories that can finish off your outfit. Nick wears a chainlink-banded silver watch almost every day. It's a good investment piece that goes with everything.
