19 Movie Sequels That People Think Should Have Been Made

We truly were robbed by not having another The Road to El Dorado film.

Whether you love it or not, when it comes to a lot of movies being released today, there tends to be a sequel, trilogy, or franchise in mind when making them.

But there are also lots of movies that truly would have been perfect for sequels and that, for one reason or another, they never decided to make more than one (or in some cases more than two).

And yesterday, Reddit user u/PharmSystem asked the AskReddit community: "What movie are you surprised that hasn’t had a sequel yet?" The thread quickly went viral as people began posting about the sequels they wish had happened. Here are some of the top-voted responses for films that they feel deserve sequels:

    1. "The Road to El Dorado was begging for a Saturday morning cartoon. The film ends basically on sequel bait! Just make the whole series about Tulio, Miguel, and Chell stumbling into other random legendary/thought lost places."

    2. "Constantine. I remember seeing an interview with Keanu a few years ago where they asked him what characters he would like to revisit and that was his answer."

    3. "Before 2015, Galaxy Quest. After Alan Rickman’s passing, I’d say let’s leave things as they are."

    4. "I just want those sequels promised at the end of 22 Jump Street."

    5. "Big Hero 6. Super successful movie, from a genre that often has sequels (superhero movies), with an ending that calls for a sequel."

    6. "Nice Guys. Ryan Gosling and the Gladiator made for a great duo. Throw in more detective hijinks and it's perfect."

    7. "Edge of Tomorrow, except a prequel centered on Rita Vrataski [Emily Blunt's character]."

    8. Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

"If I had Bezos money I would green-light an adaptation of the whole damn series."

    9. "I wish they'd done a better job with the Narnia movies so they could've made The Silver Chair and The Last Battle. Great source material."

    10. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

"There actually is a sequel book — Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator — but Roald Dahl HATED the adaptation of his first book (he disagreed with Gene Wilder's casting, thought the movie took too much focus away from Charlie — the book is called Charlie and the Chocolate Factory — and didn't like how they made Slugworth a spy for Wonka; in the book he's just a one-off character). I think it's highly likely Dahl refused to give the studio the rights to make a Great Glass Elevator movie."

    11. "Cabin in the Woods. Not that there could be a direct sequel, but it could totally have a Cloverfield-type pivot to a different film within the same universe."

    12. "Dredd (2012) was an amazing revival of the franchise. Karl Urban knocked it out. So disappointed it just stopped there."

    13. "The Sorcerer's Apprentice. It was fun and I'd like a sequel."

    14. "I really wanted sequels to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The cast was so good... Too bad the box office didn't go as expected."

    15. "I Am Legend. The book has a quite divergent plot that could be used for a sequel or two."

    16. "Gremlins. Been waiting years for a third movie."

    17. "Megamind should have gotten a sequel. It’s one of the best animated films of the early 2010s, and has a fanbase who loves the film."

    18. "Treasure Planet. It was going to happen, but it got canceled because the film didn't make enough money — 'cause it was released at the wrong time."

    19. "The Simpsons 2. In the end credits of The Simpsons Movie you can hear Maggie say 'sequel.' It’s been almost 14 years damnit!"
