What Was The Biggest Movie The Year You Were Born?

The film was the [first movie](http://www.tcm.com/this-month/article/536425%7C0/The-Robe.html) ever made with CinemaScope, which, at the time, was a new widescreen technology that was almost double the size of the cinema aspect ratios at the time.

Alfred Hitchcock's classic movie starred Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly. Stewart and Kelly also starred in other Hitchcock classics, but this was their only film of his together.

This Disney classic was the biggest movie of 1955! For the record, it was a bit hard to get the actual data for this year, but according to this [website](https://www.ultimatemovierankings.com/top-grossing-movies-of-1955/), with $28.9 million in box office revenue, _Lady and the Tramp_ was the highest-grossing movie of the year.

It was the last film acclaimed director Cecil B. DeMille directed. DeMille died less than three years after the film was released.

The movie won seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director (David Lean), and Best Actor (Alec Guinness — yup, Obi-Wan Kenobi from _Star Wars_).

The film was directed by the legendary Stanley Kubrick, who, believe or not, was actually not the first director attached to the film. Anthony Mann was the original director, but was [fired](https://plotandtheme.com/2017/03/31/spartacus-the-three-headed-triumph-of-douglas-trumbo-and-kubrick/) by the film's producer and star, Kirk Douglas, who, after a week of filming, felt Mann couldn't get the grand scope of the film.

The movie was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won 10, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress (Rita Moreno).

_West Side Story_

Before Peter O'Toole was cast as T.E. Lawrence, the film's producer, Sam Spiegel, [wanted](https://www.indiewire.com/2012/05/5-things-you-might-not-know-about-david-leans-lawrence-of-arabia-252023/) Marlon Brando for the role. Brando turned it down to do _Mutiny on the Bounty_.

The movie nearly [bankrupted](https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2001-apr-03-ca-45970-story.html) the studio behind it, 20th Century Fox, as it is one of the most expensive movies ever made. It had a budget of $42 million in 1963, which, when adjusted for inflation makes it a budget of around $280 million in 2019. To help pay for it the studio sold almost 300 acres of its backlot, which is now Century City.

Anne Bancroft, the actress who played Mrs. Robinson (who was supposed to be middle-aged), was only six years older than Dustin Hoffman, who played Benjamin Braddock (her daughter's boyfriend, whom she was seducing).

When Robert Redford [saw a rough cut](https://www.npr.org/2018/09/28/652508630/robert-redford-the-fresh-air-interview) of the film he thought the use of the song "Raindrops Are Falling on My Head" in the iconic bicycle scene would "kill the movie." Obviously it didn't, and the song went on to win an Oscar for Best Original Song.

According to [Erich Segal](https://www.nytimes.com/1997/12/14/us/author-of-love-story-disputes-a-gore-story.html), the author of the novel the movie is based on, the main character of Oliver Barrett was based on two people he went to Harvard with: Al Gore and Tommy Lee Jones (who were roommates). Funnily enough, Jones made his acting [debut](https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1997-dec-15-mn-64326-story.html) in the movie.

Chaim Topol, who played the lead role of Τevye, [also](https://www.thedailybeast.com/the-strange-power-of-fiddler-on-the-roof) played the role in the Broadway production.

[According](https://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/godfather-turns-45-10-things-film/story?id=46324480) to the film's director, Francis Ford Coppola, the crew that was working on the film thought it was going to be a bomb 'cause it was boring. Coppola also thought he was going to be fired at any moment.

Robert Redford [didn't see](https://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/13/movies/robert-redford-goes-to-sea-in-all-is-lost.html) the movie until 2004! And that was only 'cause his grandson suggested watching it.

But the studio's president intervened and suggested the movie be released in some test markets (New York, LA, and Chicago) to see how it would do...and it turned out to be a hit.

Justin Henry, who played Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep's son, Billy, got a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his role. He was 8 years old at the time and he still holds the [record](https://people.com/movies/youngest-ever-oscar-nominees/#saoirse-ronan) for being the youngest Oscar nominee ever.

_Kramer vs. Kramer_

George Lucas [hated](https://www.cbr.com/bts-facts-empire-strikes-back/) the iconic "I know" line that Harrison Ford improvised in the scene where Han Solo is frozen in carbonite. Lucas and Ford argued over keeping the line in; Lucas agreed to leave it in during test screenings. The test audiences loved it and Lucas was forced to keep it in.

The sound of the giant boulder coming toward Indy was actually the [sound](https://ew.com/movies/2018/03/30/raiders-of-the-lost-ark-facts/) of a Honda Civic's tires rolling over gravel.

The movie was [originally supposed](https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/movies/a31521/beverly-hills-cop-trivia/) to be an action-drama film starring Sylvester Stallone. After Stallone left the project the film was rewritten as an action-comedy movie, and Eddie Murphy was cast.

One big reason why using the refrigerator as the time machine was decided against was fear that kids would attempt climbing into fridges at home.

Kelly McGillis, who played Charlie, had changed her hair by the time they filmed the scene, so they kept it super dim so you couldn't tell it wasn't part of the continuity.

They went as far as to petition Warner Bros. to have him removed from the film before shooting began.

This mostly started because of stories coming from the set that it was a troubled shoot, the fact the budget had gone up several times, and that the initial release date was pushed back from July 4, 1997 to Dec. 19, 1997. It, of course, went on to become the highest-grossing movie of all time.

Columbus turned her down 'cause he had a strict rule that all the actors be British.

Hugh Jackman almost made a [cameo](https://www.huffpost.com/entry/hugh-jackman-prisoners_n_3896582) in the film as Wolverine. It wasn't intended to be anything like what we see now in the MCU, but more of a gag. Jackman never shot the cameo 'cause he couldn't find the suit at the time.

The film [broke a record](http://time.com/5148660/who-has-won-the-most-oscars/) by winning all 11 Oscars it was nominated for. The film is also currently tied with _Titanic_ and _Ben-Hur_ as the movies with the most Oscar wins.

The movie held the record for being the [highest-grossing](https://www.boxofficemojo.com/genres/chart/?id=animation.htm) animated movie of all time for 12 years, until _Finding Dory_ knocked it from the top spot (since then _Incredibles 2_ has taken the top spot).

_Revenge of the Sith_ was the last of the Skywalker Star Wars films to be released in May (close to George Lucas' birthday). The current trilogy have all come out in December.

The [reaction](https://screenrant.com/pirates-caribbean-movies-details-behind-scenes-trivia/) of the cast at the sight of Captain Barbossa being alive was genuine. The reveal was kept secret from them and they were expecting another character to be coming down the stairs.

The film's director, Sam Rami, who co-wrote and directed the _Spider-Man_ films, [hated](https://www.vulture.com/2014/12/sam-raimi-hated-spider-man-3.html) this movie as much as a lot of the audience did. He did have plans to make a fourth film, but couldn't agree with Sony on some story issues, so they went ahead and rebooted the franchise (the Andrew Garfield films).

The late Heath Ledger gave a legendary performance as the Joker, however, when it was reported that he got the role people were [not happy](https://www.businessinsider.com/heath-ledger-was-criticized-before-played-joker-2013-8) and thought he was miscast.

James Cameron broke his own record when [_Avatar_](https://www.fastcompany.com/1534850/avatar-breaks-2-billion) surpassed _Titanic_ as the highest-grossing of all time. It is now the second highest-grossing movie — it was overtaken by _Star Wars: The Force Awakens_.
