17 Songs Released Within The Last 2 Years That Sound Just Like The '90s

Songs that'll make your ears do a double take and wonder what decade it is!

    1. "A No No" by Mariah Carey

    Mariah Carey /youtube.com

Released in 2018: Alright, so it goes without saying that this song owes its ‘90s sound to the fact that Mariah sampled Lil’ Kim’s classic 1997 debut single, “Crush on You.” But, the song also echoes Mariah’s late ‘90s Rainbow-era sound.

‘90s songs to listen to that sound like this: Lil' Kim's "Crush on You" (obviously), Mariah's "Crybaby," and Mary J. Blige's "I Can Love You."

    2. "Gave Your Love Away" by Majid Jordan

    MajidJordan/ youtube.com

Released in 2017: This vocally smoothed song evokes ‘90s R&B songs by Tevin Campbell and Jodeci.

‘90s songs to listen to that sound like this: Jodeci's "Forever My Lady," Tevin Campbell's "Can We Talk," and D'Angleo's "Lady."

    3. "One Night Only" by Sonder

    Sonder/ youtube.com

Released in 2018: Like I said in a previous post (that inspired this post) Sonder has been able to perfectly capture the classic ‘90s R&B, and, at the same time, make something that sounds timeless.

‘90s songs to listen to that sound like this: LSG's "My Body," Shai’s “If I Ever Fall In Love,” and Dru Hill's "Beauty."

    4. "Boo'd Up" by Ella Mai

    youtube.com

Released in 2018: This talented British R&B singer released a song that wouldn't be out of place with something on the radio in 1994 (in the best possible way).

‘90s songs to listen to that sound like this: Ms. Lauryn Hill's "Nothing Even Matters," Janet Jackson's "I Get Lonely," and Erykah Badu's "Appletree."

    5. "Cyber Stockholm Syndrome" by Rina Sawayama

    The Vinyl Factory/ youtube.com

Released in 2017: Rina's "Cyber Stockholm Syndrome" evokes a sound that sounds something between Butterfly-era Mariah Carey and Robyn Is Here-era Robyn, and it works! Basically 1997 in a song.

‘90s songs to listen to that sound like this: Mariah's "The Roof" and "Babydoll," and Robyn's "You've Got That Somethin.'"

    6. "Thinking of You" by Mabel

    Mabel/ youtube.com

Released in 2016: Mabel's "Thinking of You," is another song that evokes '90s Mariah Carey, but without sounding like a direct copy.

‘90s songs to listen to that sound like this: Mariah's "Long Ago" and "Fourth of July," and SWV's "You're the One."

    7. "Back to Life" by Fabich x Jafunk feat. FHAT

    FHATtv / youtube.com

Released in 2018: This song sounds like Zhané (a duo that mixed chill R&B with a bit of trip hop) mixed with new jack swing.

‘90s songs to listen to that sound like this: Hi-Five's "She's Playing Hard to Get," Zhané's "Groove Thang," and "Hey Mr. D.J."

    8. "Joy Ride" by TLC

    TLC/ youtube.com

Released in 2017: TLC had a comeback last year that flew a bit under the radar — as it was a bit of a bumpy road back for the group. While it's obviously not the same without Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, this song perfectly captures TLC's sound from their classic 1994 album, CrazySexyCool, and proves that the remaining members still really have it.

‘90s songs to listen to that sound like this: TLC's "Let's Do it Again," "Diggin' on You," and "Sumthin' Wicked This Way Comes."

    9. "Not Enough" by Lido feat. THEY

    LidoGotVids / youtube.com

Released in 2017: Lido and THEY's "Not Enough" is a new jack swing song that sounds straight out of 1991!!!

‘90s songs to listen to that sound like this: Tony! Toni! Toné!'s "Feels Good," Boyz II Men's "Motownphilly," and Bell Biv DeVoe’s “Do Me!”

    10. "Would You Mind" by PRETTYMUCH

    PRETTYMUCH/ youtube.com

Released in 2017: The infectious song sounds like a mix of new jack swing and New Kids on the Block. Like other songs on this list, it wouldn't sound out of place on early '90s mix tape.

‘90s songs to listen to that sound like this: New Kids on the Block "Step by Step," Bell Biv DeVoe's "Poison," and Backstreet Boys' "We've Got it Goin' On."

    11. "Play" by Jax Jones and Years & Years

    Jax Jones/ youtube.com

Released in 2018: The song (which features great vocals by Olly Alexander) feels like it almost pulls from a blend of Stardust's "Music Sounds Better With You" and '90s NYSNC.

‘90s songs to listen to that sound like this: Stardust's "Music Sounds Better With You," and NSYNC's "You Got It" and "I Want You Back."

    12. "1999 (Alphalove Remix)" by Charli XCX & Troye Sivan

    Charil XCX/ youtube.com

Released in 2018: So the original version might have been filled lyrically with references to the '90s, but it took this remix to make it sound like something that would have come out of the decade — specifically it sounds like something that would have been played at some dance club in 1995.

‘90s songs to listen to that sound like this: Alice Deejay "Better off Alone," No Mercy's "Where Do You Go," and Real McCoy's "Come and Get Your Love."

    13. "One Kiss" by Calvin Harris & Dua Lipa

    Calvin Harris/ youtube.com

Released in 2018: Arguably the biggest song of the summer of 2018, which also sounded like a great '90s house song that would have been a summer hit over 25 years ago!

‘90s songs to listen to that sound like this: Robin S's "Show Me Love," Everything But the Girl's "Missing (Todd Terry Remix)," and Crystal Water's "100% Pure Love."

    14. "I Like That (Fabich Remix)" by Janelle Monáe

    Janelle Monáe / youtube.com

Released in 2018: The song is a great example of the power of a good remix! While the original version of the song is fantastic, the remix transforms the single into a throbbing deep-house-esque song that feels and sounds like something that would have been played at NYC's Tunnel in 1993, at like 3:30 a.m.

‘90s songs to listen to that sound like this: Madonna's "Secret (Junior's Luscious Single Mix)," Captain Hollywood’s “More and More,” and Janet Jackson's "Throb."

    15. "Between the Lines" by Robyn

    Robyn / youtube.com

Released in 2018: Obviously Robyn is no stranger to putting out dance floor bangers, and with "Between the Lines" she has created a song that, honestly, sounds like it would have been a dance hit in 1991. *Italian chef kiss*

‘90s songs to listen to that sound like this: Crystal Water's "Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless)," Dee-Lite's "Good Beat," and Cathy Dennis' "Just Another Dream."

    16. "Anna Wintour" by Azealia Banks

    Azealia Banks/ youtube.com

Released in 2018: Given Azealia's history of being very problematic, I almost didn't include her on the list. With that being said, "Anna Wintour" finds Azealia returning to the '90s ballroom/club sound of her earlier hits like "212" and "1991."

‘90s songs to listen to that sound like this: Corana's "Rhythm of the Night," Technotronic's "Pump Up the Jam," and 20 Fingers & Gillette's "Short Dick Man."

    17. "Heat (Niko The Kid Remix)" by Kelly Clarkson

    Kelly Clarkson/ youtube.com

Released in 2018: This remix completely transform's Kelly's already great "Heat" into a club banger that evokes the big vocal house music of the early ‘90s (complete with piano stabs). But in all seriousness, now all we need is for Kelly to bless us with a '90s deep house-inspired EP! 🙏

‘90s songs to listen to that sound like this: Adeva's "It Should Have Been Me," SNAP! "Rhythm Is A Dancer," and Livin' Joy's "Dreamer,"
