10 Reasons To Watch Netflix's "Marco Polo"

It's basically Game of Thrones but it actually happened. Well, most of it, anyway.

1. Historical accuracy

The costumes, the food, the lingo, it's all perfect for the time period. If you're like me and that stuff seriously matters to you, this show rocks it. Foot binding, gun powder, they've got it all down. It even rightly challenges the Euro-centric idea of "the Dark Ages" by showing what a rocking scene Asian civilizations had while Western Europe sat on their asses for a few hundred years and called it "dark". Double thumbs up for that.

This is Marco (main character). He is played by Lorenzo Richelmy who is an Italian actor with an accent that will make your panties drop.

In short, Marco Polo's worthless father leaves him at the court of the Mongol leader, Kublai Khan. The Khan likes Marco but a lot of people at court (okay everyone) doesn't trust him as an outsider. He wants to survive and Kublai wants China. It could all be a "you scratch my back, I scratch yours," except the evil Song dynasty chancellor, Jia Sidao doesn't want this to happen. Betrayal, battle, love - yeah, I'm not going to spoil anything.

This is Remy Hii who plays Prince Jinghim, the Khan's son. He is totally gorgeous and also spoiled and with daddy issues to boot. What more do you want?

5. Kick-ass women

A Chinese courtesan, a Mongolian Queen, and an exiled Princess all walk into the Khan's court. Hilarity does not ensue but rather cutthroat battles and forbidden romances. But seriously, all the women in this show kick ass. They all are complex and three dimensional and the only one out of four who is not a literal martial arts master is still a badass. This show takes the "ambitious, social-climbing woman who uses sex to get ahead" trope and grinds it into the dust, instead giving you amazing female characters who hold the spotlight more than once.

6. Seriously hot guys

This is Mahesh Jadu who plays Ahmed, the Khan's finance minister. He is smart, sly, and owner of some of the most glorious hair on this show. No lie, those locks are the wealth of the Orient.

7. Lots of fight scenes

You cannot tell me that this does not intrigue you. I mean, the Khan's main hitman, Hundred Eyes, and his main enemy Jia Sidao are both Kung Fu masters. It doesn't get more awesome than that. This show is about a warlord, for Christ's sake. I promise it will satisfy your bloodlust.

8. SERIOUSLY HOT guys

This is Uli Latukefu who plays Byamba, the Khan's bastard son. You might not think the hair style is for you, but let me tell you that not only is this man a totally amazing and loyal warrior, but he's also one of the only people who's nice to Marco. He is absolutely incredible. #Kutulamba forever

9. It's easy to binge watch because it's all on Netflix!
