These Tinned Tomatoes Have A "Potentially Explosive" Defect

Mamma mia!

Posted on

SPC Australia has announced a "precautionary decision" to recall Ardmona Whole Peeled Tomatoes because they're, well, potentially explosive.

We've taken a precautionary decision to recall Ardmona Whole Peeled Tomatoes 400g. More details below:

You can buy Ardmona whole peeled tomatoes in Coles, Woolworths and independent supermarkets all over Australia, and SPC Australia are asking people to dispose of the product.

A spokesperson for SPC Australia told BuzzFeed News the defect is actually with the can itself, and not the tomatoes inside.

"It's explosive as it makes a sound. It's being described as a shotgun sound. The tomatoes inside are forced out due to pressure in the can."

"The potential injury is very, very, very unlikely but what can happen, it feels like a recoil, and [the can] pushes into your hand. But we hope that's not the case and that's why we've gone with the recall."

The situation in the can is probably not dissimilar to that episode of The Simpsons when Bart shakes Homer's beer can in a paint mixing machine.
