The Hottest 100 is an annual music countdown organised by Australian youth radio station Triple J. Every year on January 26 people rally around a radio to count down the 100 best songs of the previous year, as voted by the Australian people.
This year's winner was young Aussie DJ Flume, with his song "Never Be Like You", but the real attention was on the Triple J Facebook page, and the actions of one particular commenter: a dude named Ben Lawson.
Ben – who was presumably also chilling at home listening to the countdown – took it upon himself to comment "Ya joking shoulda been higher" on just about every song announced on Triple J's Facebook page.
Like, every song.
And it kept going...
At first, it started slow. But eventually things ramped up and people began earnestly anticipating his "Ya joking shoulda been higher" comment.
And eventually, as with all things, people turned "Ya joking shoulda been higher" into a meme.
As the Hottest 100 reached its end, people were in more suspense about what Ben's final comment would be than they were about the winning song itself.
And Ben didn't disappoint, telling Triple J's audience it had to be joking and suggesting another, much more appropriate Australian classic.
