New Zealand police officers have shot and killed an Auckland Airport security dog after he broke loose and staff were unable to catch him.

Statement from @nzpolice about Grizz, the dog who died.

Grizz the security dog had delayed 16 domestic and international flights after he was first reported loose at 4am.

New Zealand Police were acting in a supporting role when airport staff and aviation security instructed them to shoot Grizz.

"Our thoughts are with the AVSEC dog handler involved," said inspector Tracy Phillips from the Counties Manukau District Police Force.

Waking up to the news that Grizz had been shot in the early hours of the morning, many questioned why the dog had to be shot at all and why a tranquilliser gun wasn't used.
