Entering today’s competition, Shani Davis had a chance to become the first American man to ever win gold in the same Winter Olympic event three times in a row. But it wasn’t meant to be: Davis finished eighth as the Netherlands’ Stefan Roothius won another Dutch speedskating gold.
As this image from the home stretch indicates, Davis didn’t come particularly close to winning: The blue line at the lower right shows Groothius’ pace; the Netherlands’ Koen Verweij, with whom Davis was skating, actually finished ahead of him.
Davis will have two more shots to medal. The 1,500-meter race, in which he has two Olympic silvers, is on Friday, and he’ll also compete in next week’s team pursuit event.
