Let's start with stating the obvious here — Twitter is a wild place. Like, truly wild. Every damn day there's a different drama or new rumours spreading like wildfire. The latest one to do the rounds was that Rihanna, queen of everything besides winking and releasing new music, was pregnant.
It was a simple tweet that started the rumour, and on face value, it looked kinda legit, mostly down to the screenshot of what appeared to be Rihanna's Instagram account sharing a due date.
The screenshot included a caption of a pink love heart and a baby emoji, and judging by the fact it had more than 2000 retweets, people were clearing running with it.
As predicted, the rumour spread like wildfire.
And people were taking the original tweet as gospel, even though there wasn't a stitch of evidence to back up the claim besides the screenshot.
However, it doesn't take much digging to discredit the tweet. The account from where the rumour started, which claimed the Instagram post had been deleted, describes itself as a parody account and has a grand total of 62 followers.
And just in case you're still not sure that the screenshot is actually the work of photoshop, here's a sample of other tweets from the same account, which are obviously 100% factual.
So, what's the lesson here guys? When you see something on Twitter, take it with a pinch of salt. If it sounds too wild to be true, there's a strong chance it probably is.
And just to put your mind at ease, BuzzFeed have contacted reps of Rihanna for comment.
