Mariah Carey Just Threw Some Expert Shade At "American Idol" And It's Hilarious

Nobody throws shade quite like Mariah Carey.

Everybody knows that Mariah Carey is the queen of throwing subtle but effective shade. After all, she's the person who gave us this iconic quote.

In fact, she also gave us "I don't know her: Part II" but that's not what we're here to talk about today.

We're here to talk about Mariah giving us a lesson in shade while appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live. And the subject of her shade? American Idol.

While talking about being friends with Lionel Richie, who was cast as a judge on the ABC reboot of the show, Jimmy asked Mariah if it was true that she told him not to do it.

You'll probably remember that Mariah herself was a judge back in 2013, and she doesn't exactly have glowing memories. In fact, she called her time on the show "the most abusive experience" following reports of a feud with Nicki Minaj.

Anyway, after Jimmy asked if she told Lionel not to do the show, Mariah decided to give us a step by step guide to throwing expert shade. Step one: Don't go straight for the jugular, start subtle.

The next step! Show disinterest while making clear you don't keep up with or think about the subject.

After that, you need to look like you're giving the subject a compliment, even though you're still being shady AF. Mariah does this in two steps, by first ignoring Jimmy's question...

And then following it up with the shady compliment. Mariah decides to go with saying that the best part of the whole experience was the memes.

Finally, after you've picked your shots, you go for the knockout blow and let rip.

But the shade throwing isn't over because just when everybody thinks they're safe, you follow the knockout blow with a final shady remark.

And another that's possibly been marinated in sarcasm.

Then you move on and pretend the whole thing never happened.

So there you have it. You should now have a doctorate in throwing shade. Thanks Mariah! You can watch the full clip here:
