The Latest Celeb/Coronavirus Drama Involves Cardi B, An $88,000 Purse, And A Lot Of Angry People On Twitter

"We're in a pandemic with high unemployment and people in food lines," one person tweeted. "You're talking about a purse that costs more than the average family makes in a year."

It's the beginning of a brand-new week, and we already have a new ~celeb x coronavirus~ drama to dive into. This time around, it's all to do with Cardi B, an $88,000 purse, and a pretty intense backlash.

It all started on Sunday, when Cardi tweeted asking her followers if she should splurge on a new purse. I think we can all agree that the price tag was quite eye-watering...

Should I spend 88K for this damn purse ? Omggg it’s tempting 😩😩😩

But, as you can probably guess, the tweet didn't sit well with a lot of people, especially considering we're currently in a global pandemic and economic crisis that has seen many struggling financially.

Cardi. Pls stop sis. I beg of you. We’re in a pandemic with high unemployment and ppl in food lines. Do not compare ppl finding a lil joy in a $500 gaming system and you talking about a purse that costs more than the avg family makes in a year. Log off and stop being goofy. https://t.co/igxseiZpt1

And for some, it reminded them of how other celebrities, like the Kardashians, have "flaunted money and wealth" over the last few months.

@yashar Cardi B tweeting about 88K purse, its not just her, its all celebrities flaunting money and wealth during this Covid-19 pandemic. Kim K with her private island tweet etc. its completely tone deaf. How can they stomach tweeting like this ? I would feel horrible

But Cardi wasn't about to take the criticism lying down and immediately responded, posting screenshots reminding people that she'd been donating to various COVID relief causes throughout the year.

Also I donated a million dollars to fans thru cashapp 2 months ago https://t.co/XF9sAjWIuz

    Wait also .... https://t.co/9LpZEMQXNv

The rapper then doubled down on her comments, tweeting: "If I want to splurge I can without y'all asking for handouts like me and my husband don't do so."

Also I got 7 uncles an 3 aunts on my daddy side,9 aunts and 3 uncles on my momma side a whole bunch of cousins I had to help cause of the pandemic ....If I want to splurge I can with out yall asking for hand outs like me and my husband don’t do so.Thank you. https://t.co/9LpZEMQXNv

With the outrage not exactly cooling down anytime soon, the "Bodak Yellow" rapper set up a challenge where she would match donations made to charity if fans could prove their own donation with a receipt.

Okay let’s do this challenge! Since ya want to tell me to donate soo much ...Drop receipts on what YOU have donated too.I will match it and donate to a organization you have donate as well.LETS START NOW!

But some thought that the damage had already been done, calling the original tweet "deeply insensitive and unnecessary."

It doesn't matter how much money you give away, tweeting about buying an $88,000 purse in the midst of a pandemic where people are skipping meals and terrified that they'll be evicted, is deeply insensitive and unnecessary. She chose to tweet it out. https://t.co/eaaVrggqPn

And so, with the backlash still ongoing, Cardi eventually tweeted an apology, writing: "OK guys I apologize. There you happy?! I don't see ya askin Trump for [an] apology when he out here missing COVID meetings to play golf."

However, following the drama...Cardi decided to buy the bag anyway.

Definitely buying the bag now 🤷🏽‍♀️

Sooooooo......do ya want me to show ya the purse ? 😩😂😂

Cardi hasn't posted a picture of the luxury item just yet, so we'll have to keep our eyes peeled for when it makes its debut.
