It's 2017 and there are certain things that we as a species have come to accept as factual: The sun is hot, water is wet, and Carly Rae Jepsen is the most criminally underrated songstress of our generation. But what if I told you certain things we claim to "know" might not necessarily be true?
Recently, a Reddit fan theory surrounding Leonardo DiCaprio's character in the Oscar-winning Titanic has surfaced, and it just might change the way you see the film.*
According to the theory, Jack Dawson isn't actually a real person.
Instead, the romantic, lovable lead is merely a figment of Rose's imagination, which she invents during a psychotic episode in order to distract her from her insufferable reality as an upper-class woman.
Let's investigate some possible evidence, shall we?
To begin, the first time Rose meets Jack is when she is about to jump from the ship to avoid marrying her upper-class fiancé, Cal.
The theory suggests that Jack is a projection of Rose's subconscious that appears at the perfect moment to save her and to help her realize her independence. He even tells Rose, "You're gonna die if you don't break free."
And then there is the fact that this guy says no record exists of Jack being on the Titanic.
When 101-year-old Rose hears this, she responds cryptically with "No, there wouldn't be, would there. ... He exists now only in my memory."
Finally, there is that tragic scene where Rose lets Jack drown, despite it having being proved that there was enough room for two people on that floating board.
The theory holds that Rose was able to let Jack drown so easily because he wasn't actually physically there to climb onto the board with her.
So there you have it, folks — all the information you need to make an informed decision. What do you think?

Is this a plausible theory?
