42 Reasons To Feel Amazing Every Time You Donate Blood

Keep being a lifesaver! No, really. Donated blood can only be stored for 42 days, so please, give regularly.

1. You can save three people's lives with a single blood donation.

2. Someone needs blood every three seconds.

3. And one in three Aussies will require it at some point in their lives.

4. That means one day it might be someone you love who needs it.

5. Or, it might even be you.

6. One in 10 people admitted to the hospital will need blood.

7. One blood donation is needed every eight seconds to keep up with the demand from patients in Australia.

8. Every drop of your blood contains roughly 200–300 million red blood cells.

9. That means you have about 25 trillion red blood cells in your body (so you’re probably not going to miss a few).

10. There are over 100 centres across Australia where you can donate.

11. You’re treated like a hero the second you walk through the door.

12. The staff members are all genuinely lovely.

13. They’ll remind you of the incredible thing you’re doing.

14. The appointment will only take an hour out of your day, which is nothing when you consider the lasting impact your donation can have.

15. The actual donation part lasts about 5–15 minutes.

16. It’s one of the most meaningful things you can do in that span of time.

17. Even if you get freaked out by needles, it’s easy to distract yourself by thinking about whose life your donation might save.

18. If that doesn’t work you can always watch TV or scroll through your phone (use your other arm!).

19. It’s really not as scary as you think.

20. After your blood’s been taken, you get to chill out for as long as you want in the ~refreshment centre~.

21. It’s stocked with amazing free snacks.

22. We’re talking fruit, chocolates, cheese and biccies, chips, and lollies (and you won’t even feel guilty eating whatever you want).

23. There are plenty of drinks too, like water, sports drinks, and sometimes even milkshakes!

24. You’ll leave feeling like you’ve done something amazing – because you have!

25. Did we mention the snacks?

26. If it’s your first time, you’ll get a sticker.

27. If you become a regular donor, you'll get a keyring with your blood type on it.

28. It's a good deed that doesn't cost you a cent.

29. A single blood donation (and all its components) can be used to make 22 different life-saving medical treatments.

30. You can help people with anaemia who need blood transfusions to boost their iron levels.

31. You can help severe-burn victims, who can require up to 20 units of blood for their treatment.

32. You can help accident victims who’ve suffered massive blood loss and might need numerous red-cell transfusions.

33. You can help obstetrics patients, such as pregnant women, new mothers, and young children.

34. Serum from blood can even be used to make eyedrops to treat severe dry-eye syndrome (is there anything blood can't do?!).

35. One day, out of the blue, you’ll be reminded of the wonderful thing you did when you receive a text saying where your blood is being used.

36. Of all the blood donated in Australia, 34% goes towards helping cancer and blood-disease patients.

37. Another 18% helps surgical patients, like those undergoing open-heart surgery.

38. You can donate blood every 12 weeks.

39. That means you can save 12 people’s lives every year.

40. Donated blood can only be stored for 42 days, which is why giving frequently is so important.

41. In Australia, we need more than 26,000 donations per week to keep our supply topped up.

42. It’s the simplest and most generous thing you can do for another human being.
