Just 43 Amazing Beauty And Style Things To Try This Year

We found our favorites in 2018 so you could up your game in 2019.

    1. This holy-grail facial moisturizer gave me such smooth and radiant results that I actually did a double-take in my bedroom mirror.

    Patrice Peck

I'm such a big fan of the 10-step Korean skincare routine, especially

the double-cleansing portion, that I've successfully converted my boyfriend into a believer too! Well...almost. A few months back he was looking for a new facial moisturizer and I suggested he check out my favorite Korean beauty online retailer SokoGlam for some options. After a quick browse, he landed on Klair's Rich Moist Soothing Cream. Now here we are several weeks later and thanks to the product's seriously dewy and smooth results, what was once his moisturizer is now our moisturizer. According to SokoGlam, this cult-fave baby is packed with yeast-derived beta glucan, jojoba oil, and ceramides and "works to strengthen your skin’s protective barrier, rescuing dry and irritated skin, while improving its natural cell repairing capabilities." If you're reading this bae, thank you! — Patrice Peck

Get it from SokoGlam for $23.

    2. A perfect little steamer that I can squeeze into my travel bag seamlessly and without any hassle.

    3. A dewy foundation that makes me look like I've actually drank three gallons of water and minded my business.

    4. Because of my Rent the Runway Unlimited membership, it's been 16 months since I purchased a piece of clothing.

    Augusta Falletta

The membership includes the fancy clothes you can wear on special occasions, but also designer sweaters, blouses, pants, purses, jewelry, coats, work dresses and other every day pieces you wear on a regular basis. Because I get four pieces at once, I essentially have a brand new week's worth of work clothes every week. No outfit repeating, tons of compliments (the pieces are all designer!) and less laundry because RTR handles the sustainable dry cleaning of everything.

    Augusta Falletta

Get a trial month of Rent the Runway Unlimited for $99 ($159/month after that), or try Rent the Runway Update to get 4 pieces/month for a $69 trial ($89/month after that).

    5. A silicone ring guard to keep my ring safely on my finger without having it re-sized.

    Augusta Falletta

All you have to do is choose from 1 of 3 widths of silicone, depending on your ring's width. They come in long strips. Simply wrap the silicone around the back of your ring, cutting the cord of silicone to a length that gives you enough wraps for your ring to feel secure. It takes about a minute, and I've been wearing the same guard for four months without ever taking my ring off, so it really holds up. I've worn my ring in the shower, on vacation, and even through the New York City marathon and never once worried about it coming off. — Augusta Falletta

Get it from Amazon for $3.99.

    6. Dickinson's Witch Hazel Toner has made my skin smoother, softer, and clearer.

    Augusta Falletta

After a life of mostly good skin, I recently started getting cystic acne on my chin, redness on my cheeks and more oil than usual on my forehead. I received a bottle of Dickinson's Witch Hazel Toner and started using it a few weeks ago (morning and night after cleansing and followed by moisturizer) and HOO BOY let me tell you, it's amazing. First of all, my skin is smoother than my infant nephew's butt after a warm bath. My combo skin has leveled out and the cystic acne on my chin healed — and no new pimples have sprouted up since. Plus, this massive bottle is less than $5 and will last until the 2020 election, so it's an awesome investment for such a small price. — Augusta Falletta

Get it from Walmart for $4.68.

    7. Abercrombie jeans are my ride-or-dies — they're soft, stretchy, cute (the embroidery tho!!), and best of all affordable (so I can buy as maaaaany pairs as I want).

    Sarah Han / BuzzFeed

If I could only wear one brand of jeans for the rest of my life, it'd be Abercrombie. They're also easy on the wallet and frequently on sale, so I'd recommend waiting 'til they're around $39 to $44, which is what I usually buy them for (and you can ship for free to your nearest store if you don't meet the free shipping requirement!).

They’re comfy AF, stretchy AF (i.e. the waistband doesn't cut into my stomach), and durable AF — I’ve had my jeggings for five or six years and I'm floored by the fact that there aren't any holes yet, given how much I wear them. The texture is so soft (almost buttery!) and melds perfectly with my legs wear after wear. My favorite pair, though, has to be these high-rise floral embroidered ankle jeans! Usually jeans are an afterthought to me, but this pretty design has convinced me that my jeans can be just as much of a outfit's focal point as any of my tops/jackets/dresses, etc. Bury me in them. — Sarah Han

Shop all Abercrombie jeans here, and get the embroidered high rise ankle jeans for $44 and low rise jean leggings for $39 (available in sizes 24W–32W).

    8. NYX Epic Ink Liner made me believe in drugstore makeup again because what's better than spending $ money for $$$ results? Nothing — especially when they're the perfect, matte, blacker-than-black cat eyes.

    Sarah Han

I don't wear eyeliner every day, but whenever I do, it has to be black liquid eyeliner. And not just any liquid eyeliner — it has to dry extremely fast down to a matte finish, can't bleed, can't tug on my eyelids, and has to have a flexible but firm tip that allows me 100% control and precision.

Epic Ink checks off all of the boxes, and for someone who usually defers to higher-end brands, the price (and convenience of finding it at an actual drugstore like CVS) is quite literally the cherry on top. Read my full review here! — Sarah Han

Get it from Amazon for $7 or Target for $8.99.

    9. Madewell The Transport Tote is roomy enough to accommodate work laptop and my miscellaneous hoarding tendencies, while making me look like I'm a put-together adult.

    Sarah Han

I've been with this Madewell leather tote for a year now and it's still looking fooiiineee. I used to carry my laptop to and from work in random free totes, but wanted something chic and professional to carry my giant 15" MacBook Pro, wallet, glasses, hats, and all of the miscellaneous makeup products I'm always carrying around (What, you *don't* carry at least 10 lipsticks with you at all times? Weird.) — with still lots of room to spare.

I'm not as careful as I should be with my bag — meaning I definitely throw it around everywhere — but it's held up so well that you'd think it's still new. And for those who don't need as big of a bag, the Transport tote also comes in a medium size and an even smaller crossbody version. — Sarah Han

Get it from Madewell for $168 (available in two colors).

    10. Bioré UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence is the only sunscreen I almost ever use because it doesn't feel like it's there — instead it feels like an essence that your skin immediately soaks up with zero weight, heaviness, or white cast.

    Sarah Han

Mere seconds after rubbing this into my skin, and my skin doesn't look or feel any different than its pre-sunscreen state — and it's prepped for makeup! I've also become a believer in chemical sunscreens (which convert UV rays into heat, which is then released from the skin) as a whole because of their thinner textures and lack of white cast. They might not be the best bet for super sensitive skin or skin with a damaged moisture barrier, so do a patch test to make sure it's alright for you! My skin is prone to sensitivity, but I haven't had any problems.

(I talk more about this sunscreen in a lil' post I wrote, "Cancel That 10-Step Skincare Routine For These Three Products," in case you're inclined to read.) — Sarah Han

Get it from Yesstyle for $9.16 (shipping might take longer) or Amazon for $16.90.

    11. 2018 was the year I finally started wearing graphic tees, and this one from Mess In A Bottle was worn as a frequent reminder that you put in the work first, payoff later.

Jame Jackson, Mess In A Bottle

All I want to do is create dope shit, no pun intended to the shirt. So a tee like this is the perfect addition to my closet, especially since the color scheme lets me put it with any and everything. If you need a bit of a kicker, a boost, or even just a nudge to remind others, a t-shirt like this really makes you feel like a boss. — Jamé Jackson

Get it from Mess In A Bottle for $26.95.

    12. Rag & Bone jeans are the best investment I've made this year.

Rag & Bone jeans are not cheap. At all. But after years of searching for a pair of stylish and durable jeans that looked and felt great, I finally found what I was looking for. I bought my first pair two years ago and loved them so much I decided to commit to another pair this year. The jeans look brand new even though I've worn and washed them countless times. They fit my body perfectly, they are suuuuuper comfortable, and they make me feel great. They are definitely the best closet investment I've made this year. — Daniela Cadena

Get the High Waist Ankle Skinny Jean (left) from Nordstrom for $195 (available in sizes 23-31).

    13. The Alma Aromathrepary moisturizing face serum smells like roses and it's the only thing saving my dry skin this winter.

    Daniela Cadena,

I normally have combination skin but in the winter it dries out like crazy. I am also the worst and sometimes forget to wear moisturizer. This winter I added something new to my skincare routine and it has made such a difference. Though I was wary of oils before because I thought they'd make my T-zone oiler than it already is, I now keep this serum on my nightstand and I put on 2-3 drops on my face every night. The result: smooth, hydrated, glowing skin. — Daniela Cadena

Get it from Alma Aromatherapy for $22.

    14. Malvicino Swim's reversible bathing suits are my new favorite thing to wear in the summer. Their design is, clean, minimalistic, and functional.,

Swimwear shopping was never something I'd get excited about. It seemed like most of the swimsuits in the market were either covered in an unnecessary amount of beads and pompoms, or had a random word like "pasta" written across the chest area. That's why I was thrilled when I found Malvicino Swim. Their designs are simple yet fun, and all styles are fully reversible. So you basically get two bathing suits in one. They're also super so soft and comfortable, so you're going to want to wear them all vacation long. I did! — Daniela Cadena

Get the Lana top for $75 and the Ubud bottom for $75 from Malvicino Swim.

    15. Everyone should have a great power suit in their closet.

    Daniel Cadena,

I got this suit at Zara summer sale and paid less than $70 for the pants and blazer. I didn't love how it fit originally, it was kind of boxy and the pants were wayyyy too long, so I got it tailored. The tailoring cost me around $30, so all in all the suit was about $100. It was so worth it! I wear this suit all the time now. It's great for weddings, panels, events, whatever. I sometimes even wear the pants to the office, or the blazer with jeans for dinner with friends. — Daniela Cadena

This particular suit isn't for sale anymore, but Cardi B's Fashion Nova line has two beautiful suits in mustard and blue. You can get the blazer for $59.99 and the pants for $39.99.

    16. I got a lash lift for the first time ever two years ago, and I loved it so much, I even wrote about it. I still get them every 3-4 months now.

    BuzzFeed / Via

I love big, curly, beautiful lashes. Unfortunately for me, mine are incredibly straight and even if I use a curler, they won't really bend. I tried extensions, but I didn't like how they felt and the fact that I couldn't really touch my eye when I had them on. A lash lift is way more low-maintenance and it gives me a natural look I can amplify with tons of mascara if I want. I get it done for special occasions, or when I go on vacation and don't really feel like doing my makeup every day. It usually lasts between one and two months, depending on how ofter you sweat or wash your face. It has been an absolute game-changer for me this year. — Daniela Cadena

Get it from The Lash Loft in New York for $160.

    17. Zella is a Nordstrom-exclusive athletic wear brand responsible for making clothes that are cute, functional, comfortable, and won't break the bank.,

I used to be the person who would show up to the gym wearing black leggings and an old t-shirt I got from an extra curricular activity in high school. I basically didn't care what I wore, until I got a cute workout set from Zella. All of their stuff is super cute, practical, and functional. Also, their pants have pockets!!!! Which is definitely a game-changer for me. And last but certainly not least, all of their stuff is actually affordable! — Daniela Cadena

Get the Mix It Up Tank from Nordstrom for $19.49 (available in sizes XXS-XXL and in three colors), the Moonlight High Waist Leggings for $59 (available in sizes XXS-XXL and in five colors), and the Vixen Sports Bra for $35 (available in sizes S-XL and in two colors).

    18. Halogen makes a ton of high quality closet staples and standout pieces at affordable prices.

    Daniela Cadena

I'm a huge Nordstrom fan in general, but I especially love their in-house lines. Halogen is one of my favorites because they make classic pieces that will never go out of style, but they also sprinkle in statement trendy pieces that will likely turn heads. This winter I got a couple sweaters from them, a furry scarf, and plaid suit from the Atlantic Pacific collaboration. — Daniela Cadena

Get the Atlantic-Pacific Colorblock Faux Fur Stole (left) from Nordstrom for $89, the Atlantic-Pacific Plaid Wide Leg Crop Pants (left) for $99 (available in sizes 0-14 and 0P-16P), and the Atlantic-Pacific Menswear Plaid Blazer (left) for $149 (available in sizes regular and large).

    19. I intentionally set out to support woman-owned brands last year, and the Nina fringe skirt by Hanifa was one of my favorite purchases.

    20. This Philadelphia Print Works Chisholm for President sweatshirt is my go-to when the world is overwhelming and I need to lean on the powerful women who came before us.

    21. Following @Tinted on Instagram has filled my feed with the voices of women who we don't often hear from in mainstream media.

    Instagram: @tinted

Tinted, founded by beauty entrepreneur and influencer Deepica Mutyala, was started to celebrate "every shade in between." Every time I open the IG app on my phone, Tinted is at the top of my feed, showing me women of color who are celebrating their skin, hair, and personalities in a way mainstream media is just beginning to showcase now. They've got a series called "Hue to Know" featuring different women telling their stories each week. They get real in the comments section about discussing damaging beauty ideals. And they've got really, really good merch, including the "My Skin Is Not A Trend" shirt. Give 'em a follow and get to know some incredible women. — Augusta Falletta

    22. Following Elizabeth Holmes' So Many Thoughts™ royal sartorial coverage on Instagram has made me appreciate fashion and the effort behind it in a whole new light.

Elizabeth Holmes / Via Instagram: @eholmes

A veteran journalist with a penchant for royal fashion, @Eholmes delivers So Many Thoughts™ with each newly released photograph of the royal fam. Did Kate repeat an outfit so that she'd seem more relatable? Did Meghan choose a designer because of their charitable business plan? Are velvet bows going to be sold out forever because of Kate's hairstyle? The answer to all of these questions is "yes," but let Elizabeth take you on this thought journey in her Instagram stories. It's enlightening and thoughtful and original. My favorite part: it's all without the whole "Kate vs. Meghan" undertone of many fashion critiques. As Queen Elizabeth Holmes will tell you, she's #TeamBoth and we should all be. — Augusta Falletta

    Follow Elizabeth on Instagram: @eholmes

    23. Listening to Therapy for Black Girls podcast not only allows me to have weekly mini 'therapy' chats, but it also affirms that some things, such as micro-aggression, aren't all in my head.

    24. Nyma Tang is one of my favorite YouTubers not only because she is absolutely stunning, but also because her platform really educates people on colorism in the beauty industry.

    25. Trenza is a brand made by, and for, Latinas. They showcase, promote, and empower Latina creatives through content, commerce, and community.

    Instagram: @holatrenza

I started following Trenza on Instagram this year and I always loved everything they did, from their content, to the events they hosted. They recently invited me to be part of panel about Latina influencers and I got to experience first-hand the magical community they've created. The energy in the room that night was surreal, and I got to meet the most incredible people thanks to Trenza. As a Latina in media, it's nice to see Trenza do what they do, because their work is so important for our community. Also, they have a dope e-commerce site. — Daniela Cadena

    26. A custom grill set complete with a step-by-step guide, mold kit, and my fly mouth piece so I can live my best life.

    27. Comfort is key for me since I'm always on the go, so this Universal Standard tie front dress came into my life right on time because I can easily wear it for all occasions.

    28. Glow Recipe Watermelon Juice Moisturizer is a treat for your skin in many senses: your face will soften and plump up, and your nose will love the sweet watermelon scent. Perfect for oily/combination skin types as a moisturizer, or as a serum for dry skin types (followed by a heavier moisturizer).

    Sarah Han / BuzzFeed

What makes something truly game-changing for me is how often I use it — aka, if I consciously (and subconsciously) reach for it after I wash my face. Glow Recipe’s Watermelon Glow Juice Moisturizer is one of those products, and its gel-like formula is the definition of lightweight, quick-absorbing, and cooling. Most importantly, it makes my face feel hella soft, visibly hydrated (it doesn’t just disappear), and just the slightest bit bouncier. I can't trust any moisturizer without hyaluronic acid as one of its main ingredients. And watermelon has major soothing properties, which is clutch whenever my face decides to flare up with redness after a particularly thorough cleansing sesh. Never stop making this, Glow Recipe! — Sarah Han

Get it from Sephora or Glow Recipe for $21+ (available in mini and standard sizes).

    29. Dying my hair pink has become the positive bump in ~spirit~ and ~adventure~ (I have the photos from L.A., Seoul/Busan, and Hong Kong to prove it!) I needed in 2018.,,

I've never been one to care much about my hair until I started bleaching it — I was mostly blonde, then had a brief (questionable) purple stick before venturing into pink. While I'd rather spend 4-6 hours doing pretty much anything else besides sitting in a salon, I love what a big statement those few hours make. As someone who's spent her whole life as a bit of a wallflower, afraid to speak up and be herself, pink gave me the confidence to flaunt myself a bit and have others take notice. It's become a part of my identity (my friend Devon refers to me as "Pink Sarah," lol) and I wouldn't have it any other way! Shoutout to Amelia at Bumble & Bumble for working her magic on my hair!

BTW, the only reason my hair stays pink beyond the first two washes is because I'm always using pink conditioners — Kevin Murphy's Autumn. Angel Apricot Rose Colour Treatment (which my friend gave me) has been a lifesaver in that department. I'm also a fan of Overtone's Pastel Pink line, as well as Lime Crime's Unicorn Hair (any pink shade, really), depending on what shade/intensity of pink I'm feeling. — Sarah Han

    30. Huda Beauty The New Nude Eyeshadow Palette is quite literally the only eyeshadow palette I really need in my life — it's a pink lover's dream., Sarah Han

When Huda’s The New Nude Eyeshadow Palette landed on my desk, I knew it would be love at first application. When it comes to eyeshadow, I want them to 👏show up 👏on my eyelids, which means they gotta be very pigmented from the very first swipe. Huda eyeshadows have always done just that, but this particular shade range just speaks to my heart.

Fantasy (my favorite base or solo color), Crave (for the perfect inner corner sparkle), Daydream, and Charmed are by far my favorite shades because they all have shimmering pearl flecks that impart this gorgeous, duo-chromatic finish that looks sooo good on their own, which is quite a feat and comes in real handy when I'm in a hurry (first selfie), and even better when layered (second selfie). I've never see multidimensional shades quite like them and they're sparkly without being messy! I've been wearing them nonstop, but I also love that this palette has a variety of finishes, from mattes to straight-up glitter — so it's easy to create looks of all intensities. Lovelovelove. — Sarah Han

Get it from Sephora for $65.

    31. Tatcha The Essence has made my skin softer, plumper, and all around clearer/happier (in addition to a consistent skincare routine), and I can't imagine skincare without it.

Tatcha The Essence is my holy grail, my skin's anthem, and the deliverer of softness. Yes, I know the price tag is extremely steep, but I totally attribute this to the health and softness of my skin throughout the colder months, and it also keeps my skin glowing all year round — my skin Drinks. It. Up. I also like to apply multiple layers of essence — some people do up to seven layers — but I just do three, only taking a few drops at a time. Gently patting in my essence is also a signal to my brain that I'm officially unwinding for the night — and that's priceless. Read up on why essence is an important skincare step everyone should incorporate into their routine in. — Sarah Han

Get it from Sephora for $95.

    32. As soon as I put these Everlane booties on, I immediately understood what all the shoe hype is all about. These shoes feel like buttery-soft leather, which gives you an instant luxurious feel.

    33. Traveling more amazing places is on my bucket list, and I found myself doing a ton of that with the Genius Pack carryon suitcase that has a hard top and wheels that roll every direction. Yes!

    Jame Jackson

Did you ever wonder if there really could be affordable-yet-sturdy luggage? I did because my bags always seemed to get dirty or rip if they caught on something. This suitcase has a hard top, so little bumps and dings won't affect the exterior. Also the wheels move in all degrees, so no more of that weird body placement to push your luggage while you're boarding.

The inside of the suitcase also is fly — it comes with compartmentalized spaces that you can put key items in, which really helps me not get frazzled before a big trip. — Jamé Jackson

Get it from Genius Pack for $178 (available in four colors).

    34. Biobelle sheet masks are my all time favorites. I use them every time I travel and they make my skin feel and look much better, even after being stuck in a plane for hours.

    Daniela Candena,

Sheet masks on planes are one of the best things I started doing in 2018. The altitude, plus the air conditioning and lack of humidity in a plane, dries out your skin and makes it look dull. That's why we always look a little rough when we travel. So now, I put on a Biobelle mask (typically the #DECADENCE mask) 30 minutes before landing, and I just sit back and relax. It reenergizes my skin and it provides it with the moisture it needs. — Daniela Cadena

Get it from Biobelle starting at $3.99.

    35. Vive Cosmetics makes great matte lipsticks that are highly pigmented and long-lasting.

Vive Cosmetics is a Latinx-owned makeup brand that also happens to make my favorite fall lipstick (which I'll realistically wear year-round). I only say it's a fall lipstick because it's a nice terracotta color, which most people would associate with that time of the year. It's a great neutral color that I can wear every day, but with the right eye makeup, it can also compliment a more dramatic look. — Daniela Cadena

Get it from Vive Cosmetics for $19.

    36. The Diorshow Mascara gives my lashes the buildable volume they desperately need.

    37. These Bijoux de Pele eyeliner stickers are my favorite invention ever. I suck a doing a winged liner, so this saves me!

    Daniela Cadena

When I first got these I was a little skeptical and didn't think they would work or look good, but I am so glad I was wrong. I wore these eyeliner stickers to our company holiday party and I am now obsessed and want to wear them everywhere. They come in different colors and shapes, so there's a little bit of everything for everyone. They are very easy to put on, and they feel as if you were wearing fake eyelashes; a little weird at the beginning, but you quickly get used to it. They are also very easy to peel off. This is a lifesaver for those of us who love bold makeup looks, but aren't pros. —Daniela Cadena

Get it from Bijoux de Pele starting at $18.90.

    38. The Flesh Beauty Swipe Flesh compact is my go-to every time I want a bold lip.

    Daniela Cadena,

The formula is ~buttery soft,~ and you can use it as a light tint, or layer it for a ton of pigment. It has a satin finish that looks matte, but doesn't feel drying at all.

To apply it, you can use your finger, which is great if you don't mind washing your hands every time you put it on, but if you're more of a perfectionist, you can use a lip brush. Personally, I'm a hot mess, so I've been using my fingers, but I like it better that way because I can control the intensity of how it goes on. — Daniela Cadena

Get it from Ulta for $24 (available in seven colors).

    39. This slightly tinted CoTZ SPF will protect your face from the sun, without making it feel oily or sticky.

    40. Dr Roebuck’s Hydrating Mask is like a drink of water for your face.

This mask saves my skin every time I travel or whenever I have a rough skin week. It's infused with red algae, hyaluronic acid, cucumber, and chamomile and it leaves me feeling refreshed and hydrated every time I put it on. I often do this in the summer after going to beach repeatedly, in winter when I feel like my skin is drying out, or after constant travel. — Daniela Cadena

Get it from Sephora for $28.

    41. I started using Elizabeth Arden's Retinol Ceramide Capsules and I'm never going back to a life without them.

    42. This Calpak Ambeur 3-Piece Rose Gold Luggage Set packs a LOT and stores easily so it's a yes for me, dawg. *Randy Jackson voice*

    Anisha Sisodia / BuzzFeed

For starters, each piece fits into the piece that's the next size up. So the small carry on (22” x 14” x 8.5”) fits inside the medium luggage (26” x 16” x 10.5”), and the medium luggage fits inside of the large (30” x 19” x 12”). This is ideal if you're living in a small space or want to use your closet for as many shoes as possible and not a bunch of clunky suitcases. Also, it fits a lot of stuff inside because the bottom and top are hollow, so you can pack things past the rim and still have room to zip it closed. If you're on a budget and want cute, practical luggage or if you live in small space it's totes worth it IMO! —Essence Gant

Get it from Calpak for $385. Read my full review here.

    43. Pat McGrath Labs Mothership V Eyeshadow Palette: Bronze Seduction had me out here thinking I was a real MUA ... and don't even get me started on this gorgeous packaging.

    Essence Gant

The makeup artist and icon finally launched her own brand and the products are pigmented and luxe because DUH, it's Pat. The Mothership V Palette: Bronze Seduction is my current obsession and here are all reasons I'm swooning over it:

The pigment payoff is actually insane, in a good way, and there are 10 shades in matte and shimmer formulas. In the pic above, I'm only wearing one very light-handed application of the shades Elite Flame and Bronze Blaze, so you can only imagine if you were to really build on the shadow. And because it is so pigmented, a little goes a very long way and the palette lasts forever. But onto the packaging, which I'm OBSESSED with. It comes in this sleek and chic hard black rectangle case that kind of looks like a formal clutch when you close it. You'll be getting a quality and glamorous experience with this palette. —Essence Gant

Get it from Sephora for $125. (Payment plan option of three $42 installments also available on Pat McGrath.) Read my full review here.
