16 Holiday Commercials That Have No Right Making People Feel This Sentimental

I actually hate how a good commercial can make me cry. Like, I hate how much control it has over me.

Recently, I asked the BuzzFeed Community which Christmas commercials always made them choke up and feel nostalgic. We got some super specific responses, so let's take a look at commercials of Christmas past.

    1. "The Hershey Kisses playing 'We Wish You a Merry Christmas.' It's not Christmas until I see that commercial."

    2. "Santa riding the Norelco electric shaver through snowy scenery. It used to air during all the Christmas shows like Rudolph, Frosty the Snowman, How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, A Charlie Brown Christmas, etc. It’s an integral part of my cultural childhood as much as those shows are."

    3. "Is it weird that the Corona 'O Christmas Tree' commercial reminds me of Christmas as a kid? I grew up in Florida, so Christmas was always warm, and the palm tree light up reminds me of home. I'm also Chicana, so I appreciate that it's from a Mexican brand 😂."

    4. "Definitely the one where the bookstore burns down, and a little girl goes around town collecting donated books to help the man rebuild his shop. I think it was a car commercial within the last five years."

    6. "There is a brand-new advert which is going around social media at the moment. It's about a little boy who's father is very upset because of the cost of living crisis. It is such an emotional advert, and I nearly ended up crying because of it."

    7. "That 'Extended Family' Coke commercial from about 20 years ago? The guy walking through the party singing about everyone there. Then, he gets to one and sings, 'And the first girl that I ever kissed. You're beautiful, I love you.' And there's a second of silence and a dumbfounded look on her face before the song continues, and I end up crying every time."

Payless was a local chain in the Pacific Northwest, kind of like Walmart, that eventually got bought out by Rite Aid. I will go on YouTube this time of year and watch cheesy '80s commercials to hear the jingle."

    14. "When I was a kid in the '80s, I remember Hardee's giving out these little plush Disney stuffed animals around Christmas time. There was a commercial about it that I loved, that showed kids looking into paper bags and little magic sparkles coming out of them, and then, they pull out those little stuffed animals. Just a very simple thing, but definitely the stuff of childhood magic. I was collecting those animals myself at the time, so I thought those commercials were wonderful! It still brings back warm, nostalgic feelings for me even now as an adult in my 40s!"

    16. Finally, "The John Lewis ad where the little boy is frightened by the monster under the bed, though they ultimately become pals. 'Golden Slumbers' plays in the background, because the little boy gets little to no sleep, as he’s hanging out with the monster when he should be sleeping. One Christmas, the kid gets an ill-wrapped gift. He looks worried, as if he knows what’s coming. It’s a marvelous gift from the monster, but that night is the last time he sees the monster. The next night, when he peers under the bed, the monster is gone. The boy has now grown too old for monster friends. I wept every time I saw that...and during most John Lewis ads."
