10 Musicals That Should Get The Live Broadcast Treatment Next

Little Shop of Horrors

I may be biased because of my name, but I think Little Shop of Horrors is a kickass musical. Funny, quirky, and stylish, it would be awesome to see a network take on such a unique show. Bonus points if they actually use the downbeat ending from the musical rather than the slightly more optimistic one from the film version.

West Side Story

After Grease, The Sound of Music, Peter Pan, and The Wiz, West Side Story seems like an obvious choice. It's a beloved musical with great music, choreography, and the opportunity to showcase hot new talent. Frankly I would be shocked if they didn't announce this within the next year.

Annie

Look, I don't like it any more than you do. But the fact remains, a lot of people enjoy Annie, and since these are television networks that always play it safe, it makes sense that they would try to get huge numbers by staging a big family friendly production. Search your feelings, you know it to be true.

Guys and Dolls

The possible upside of doing a show like Guys and Dolls is that most people have only seen the movie, which wasn't as good as it could have been. So instead of having the insurmountable challenge of redoing a nearly perfect film, they might actually be able to improve on what is currently out there.

Chicago

Everyone likes Chicago, right? It's been sufficiently long enough since the 2002 film version of the musical to bring it back. The high production values of Chicago's most famous numbers lend themselves particularly well to the camera, and with the right cast, this could be fun.

Bye Bye Birdie

This is another one of those sweet, old-timey musicals that might appeal to a network trying to get a family audience. Plus, all you have to do is cast some current teen sensation in the role of Birdie and you have instant ratings.

Bat Boy

Look, I recognize that this is never, ever going to happen. But the world needs to know about Bat Boy, the bizarre half-bat, half-human abomination. I don't know what network wouldn't want to work on a musical that combines bat sexual assault and incest.

Wicked

I'm pretty sure everyone in the world would watch this if it happened. They've been talking about there being a Wicked movie pretty much since the show opened, but nothing has come of it. Lea Michele, you need to get on that.

Newsies

Newsies is a fun musical with a cult following, great numbers, and a ton of cute boys dancing around. What's not to like? It made the transition from film to theater a few years back, so it's all adapted and ready to go for ABC to take a chance on it.
