It was called ‘Hell with the Lid Off’ because of the insane amount of air pollution due to the smoke and soot produced by the many steel mills. The air was so dirty that, when people went to work in the morning, by lunchtime their collars were completely gray. It was also customary for people to give their houseguests a wet washcloth when they came to call because of this.
