In honor of Season 23 of The Amazing Race BuzzFeed Travel spoke to adventurer and TAR host Phil Keoghan to find out his favorite destinations from around the world.

1. Stromboli in the Aeolian Islands

"Rising 3,000 feet out of the Aeolian Sea, Stromboli is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. A few years ago, I took a chef to the top of the volcano for a five-star dinner that he cooked using the heat of the volcano."

"This is where I grew up for eight years. A beautiful Caribbean island that offers 365 beaches that are regarded as the world’s best."

"Visiting Mongolia feels like going back in time. This enormous country is sparsely populated with 30% of the population being nomadic. Think about making your next adventure to this remote part of the world, where you can stay in a yurt, a portable house."

"If you love water [and water sports] make sure you put this place on your list. Crystal clear freshwater springs located in dense woodlands, and the water at a constant 72 degrees year round. This is where I did my cave diving certification but it also offers pretty much every water sport you can think of."

"The fish market is a seafood lover's paradise with a selection that is hard to beat. Just thinking about it makes me hungry."

"When I think of Hawaii I always think of Jurrasic Park and the lush jungles along the Hana Highway. As far as drives go, this one is hard to beat."

"I first visited Iquique, Chile, in the ‘90s to do my solo paragliding certification. Located on the edge of the Pacific Ocean and the Atacama desert this is a flying mecca. I can’t wait to share it with the teams!"

"I was lucky enough to spend a night sleeping a hundred feet up in a tree of the Los Angeles Cloud Forest where I was woken up by the sounds of the jungle and fresh Costa Rican coffee before zip lining my way back to civilization. Costa Rica is considered by many to be the most bio diverse place on Earth."

"This is Italy at its finest. Five traditional villages along the rugged coast line of the Italian Riviera. Plus the wine and food are an equal match for the spectacular scenery."

"The opal capital of the world where more than 50% of the population live underground. This is mad max territory."

11. New Chums Beach in the Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand

"Consistently voted one of the world’s top beaches. There are no roads to this idyllic destination. It takes about 30 minutes to walk around the rugged coast line and a climb through the native New Zealand bush before you are rewarded with this spectacular national treasure."

"The adventure capital of the world! This is where I broke a world record bungee jump leaping with the commercial inventor Henry Van Asch. There are more adventure opportunities packed into this little town than any other place on earth."

"Niue is known as the rock of the Pacific, so remote that there is only one flight in and out every week. Ironically, this Pacific Island has no beaches but the water is so clear it makes this unknown escape the perfect place to scuba dive."

17. Pagosa Springs, Colorado

"Pagosa Springs was my favorite pit stop during my ride across America. I always say that places are about people, and that is certainly true of Pagosa Springs."

"Istanbul is the gateway between East and West, filled with spectacular mosques and inviting bath houses. If you are a foodie, this city is full of flavor. During one of my visits I made the crazy decision to swim one mile across the Bosphorus from Asia to Europe just so I could say I’ve done it."

19. Ashford Castle on the Mayo/Galway border in Ireland

"This medieval castle was built centuries ago and is now a five-star luxury hotel located on 350 acres of manicured gardens and beautiful park land. It’s not cheap, but if you can afford it you won’t regret a visit."

"Bhutan is a landlocked country in the Himalayas. Every year they have an archery festival that has been on my list of NOW life list for more than a decade. Getting to this kingdom isn’t easy but one day I am going to make the effort."

22. Venezuela

"I love getting unplugged and I did this once in Venezuela where I traveled up a remote river to meet with a chief and live among his people for a few days. I ate capybara (the world’s largest rodent), green ants, and greasy freshwater stingray. In the end, I settled for the piranha stew. Apart from the risk of cutting your mouth on their teeth, they have incredible flavor."

23. Jigokudani Monkey Park, Japan

"Jigokudani Monkey Park is hidden in the mountains of Japan. Watching a red-faced monkey bathing in the hot baths of Jigokudani Park might be one the funniest things I’ve ever seen. It’s just an hour and a half by bullet train out of Tokyo and a mile-long hike up a snow covered mountain."
