No because the obsession with straightening Black hair did not start from Blacks themselves. Its started with slave owners and that insistence that our own natural hair was somehow lesser got so ingrained in our own minds as a race that now it’s all too commonplace. African Americans don’t straighten their hair to be “cool” or “hip” like people do when they wear cornrows or headdresses, we do it because Western society has been telling us for hundreds of years that every thing that shows our African roots is not acceptable or sexy. It wasn’t until recently that thick lips, big butts and brown (but not too brown) skin has become the ideal. And all of these things are stereotypically attributed to Latina and Black women. Luckily, the natural hair movement has been gaining ground in the Black community as we’ve come to realize how brainwashed we were to believe our kinky hair isnt just as beautiful as straight hair.
