Michael Ian Black Is Writing A Book About Masculinity
A Better Man is scheduled to come out next fall.
Writer, actor, and comedian Michael Ian Black has a new book in the works called A Better Man, to be published by Algonquin Books in fall 2019. According to Algonquin's press release, A Better Man is "a poignant look at boyhood, in the form of a heartfelt letter from Black to his teenage son before he leaves for college, and a radical plea for rethinking masculinity and teaching young men to give and receive love."
Black — who most recently published the children's book I'm Sad — talked to AM to DM's Isaac Fitzgerald about masculinity on June 12, in relation to the New York Times op-ed he wrote following the Parkland shooting.
"My interest is in expanding the language of masculinity, and expanding the ideas of masculinity," Black said, pointing to unrealistic expectations for boys and men to be "stoic" and therefore isolated. "[My interest is in] expanding what it means to be a man so we can fully incorporate our masculinity into our humanity."
Black spoke about leading his son by example: "That means a lot of touching, hugging, telling him I love him, giving him praise for his emotional intelligence, and trying to be the kind of father I wish I had had."
