A Dissection Of History’s Most Awkward High-Five

In a world of literally millions of failed high-fives, it takes something special to truly stand out.

We meet our players — likely brother and sister, as the suggested “Family Feud” lettering in the background suggests — immediately following a win. They’re gleeful, unthinking, and eager for the high-five. We’re rooting for these guys!

Almost immediately, though, the seams of this high five begin to unravel — the cause of which is found right around frame six. The sister’s shoulders have tensed along with her slightly-shut eyes. She’s doubting herself, and her body language reveals a destructive hesitation that her brother is, as yet, oblivious to.

Ever the problem-solver, Sis immediate tries to correct her trajectory by lifting her elbows, and we see here in frame seven that her face has calmed to an easy smile. “Ah yes, here it is,” she thinks, confident again, but misguidedly so. While her hands are closer to her brother’s, the angle is still all wrong; with firm hands perpendicular to the ground, she’s poised for a straight shot ahead, as opposed to her brother, whose full-body lean — mimicked in his upper arms — suggest an obvious downward arc. The high five is unfortunately doomed.

In the last split-second, sister pauses and re-launches her arms up in a sort of unbridled Hail Mary, but still to no avail. Their hands miss, inevitably, and the reality of the failing high-five settles into brother’s face, whose smile is now frozen in a grimace. His chin dips into his chest as if in attempt to curl his entire body into a ball and roll away from the regrettable situation like a tumbleweed.

Having no hands to break her momentum, sister falls slightly forward, eyes closed, arms flailing like a poor soul lost in the dark. Brother, where are you?

Her fall is broken by her brother’s head in the midst of a mess of limbs. Is that you? Are we high-fiving?

Having realized the impressive extent of their failure, both quickly and in unison bring their arms to their sides.

With sheepish smiles and slightly-sunk shoulders, the duo turn to face the crowd and, in extension, their defeat. They have the power to define this moment and they seem to be approaching it with relative grace.

And they clinch it in the end! By literally shrugging off the snafu, the duo challenge the audience’s assumptions — lol just try to make us care , their blasé attitude suggests — and they await their next inevitable win.
